Hong Kong unveils new 2018 banknote family
25 07, 2018 09:38
According to a Hong Kong Monetary Authority press release dated 24 July 2018, the Standard Chartered Bank, Bank of China, and Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation have unveiled the designs of a new 2018 series of banknotes.
"Consistent with the current series, the new series will consist of five denominations, each adopting the same colour scheme. It is the first time that the thematic subjects on the reverse side of the NIBs’ new series banknotes are standardised for each denomination to facilitate easy recognition by the public. The selected thematic subjects represent different aspects of Hong Kong as an international metropolis, featuring its rhythm of life, recreation and entertainment, as well as its rich natural and cultural heritage. The five denominations depict respectively the position of Hong Kong as international financial centre (HK$1,000), the spectacular Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark (HK$500), Cantonese opera as our art and cultural legacy (HK$100), butterflies that inhabit Hong Kong (HK$50), and the popular dim sum and tea culture (HK$20). For aesthetic presentation of the subject and easy distinction from previous series, the reverse side of the banknote is in vertical orientation instead of the traditional horizontal layout.
The designs of all five denominations were unveiled today. The HK$1,000 and HK$500 notes will be put into circulation in the last quarter of 2018 and early 2019 respectively, and the lower denominations of HK$100, HK$50 and HK$20 will be ready for issue in batches between 2019 and 2020."

Philippines new color 100-peso note introduced 01.02.2016
23 02, 2016 13:18
According to a press release dated 29 January 2016, "The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is issuing 100-Piso banknotes with stronger mauve or violet color starting Monday, 01 February 2016, to make it more distinct from the 1000-Piso banknote. This is in response to suggestions from the public to make it easier to distinguish from the 1000-Piso banknote [P211].
Compared with the current color of the 100-Piso banknote in circulation [P208], the new 100-Piso banknote will have stronger mauve or violet color on the obverse and reverse sides. All the other features of the said banknote will remain the same.
The current 100-Piso banknotes can still be used for daily transactions for payment of goods and services and will commingle with the new 100-Piso banknotes with stronger mauve or violet color until supplies of the first version last. Henceforth, the BSP will be printing the 100-Piso with stronger mauve or violet color.
Only the old banknote series (New Design Series, NDS)[P193 - P197], launched in 1985, will no longer be acceptable in daily transactions for payment of goods and services and can only be exchanged for New Generation Currency (NGC) banknotes with authorized agent banks and the BSP until 31 December 2016."

Both the $50 and $10 notes have security features that are the first of their kind in the world to be used on a currency note. The security stripe on the $50 note has a unique see-through feature with “image movement effects” that create depth to the image of Mr Lee Kuan Yew. The SG50 logo has “color-switching effects”, with the year flipping from ‘1965’ to ‘2015’. The $10 notes have a security stripe with a “switching effect” which features the Singapore Coat of Arms, SG50 logo and the years ‘1965’ and ‘2015’.
The SG50 commemorative notes were designed by four local artists and designers, namely Mr Chua Mia Tee, Mr Eng Siak Loy, Mr Weng Ziyan and Mr Fabian Lim.
The public can exchange the SG50 commemorative notes at face value at branches of nine major retail banks from 20 August 2015 onwards.
The public is advised not to rush to obtain the notes. There will be enough notes for Singaporeans. “There will be enough SG50 notes available for exchange. A total of 20 million pieces of the $50 notes and 75 million pieces of $10 notes - 15 million pieces of each design - are being printed. There is no need to rush.”, said Dr Andrew Khoo, Deputy Managing Director (Corporate Development).
Singaporeans will be given priority to exchange the notes from 20 August 2015 to 30 September 2015. During this period, Singaporeans have to present their National Registration Identification Card (NRIC) at the bank in person as proof of citizenship. From 1 October 2015 onwards, the SG50 notes will be made available to non-Singaporeans as well.
To ensure that everyone has an opportunity to exchange the SG50 commemorative notes, there will be a quota of five sets of notes (each set comprising a $50 note and five $10 notes) per transaction per individual. The public can choose to exchange any number or combination of notes subject to a maximum of five notes per design.
Members of the public can also obtain specially-designed folders to keep the commemorative notes. They can obtain one complimentary folder when they exchange for any of the commemorative currency notes. There is no minimum amount they need to exchange to obtain the folder. An additional folder will be given if two full sets of notes (each set comprising a $50 note and five $10 notes) or more are exchanged. The public can only obtain up to a maximum of two folders per transaction. The folders will be available at the banks on a first-come-first-served basis and while stocks last. The nine major retail banks have sponsored 2.8 million of these specially designed folders.
An exclusive collection of seven limited edition SG50 numismatic currency sets are available for sale. The numismatic sets are sold by Noel Gifts International Ltd (Noel Gifts). Details of the numismatic currency sets are at Annex 2. For enquiries, details on prices and orders, the public can contact Noel Gifts on 6299 1155 or place their order online at http://www.sgnumismatic.com. Sets that are oversubscribed will be subjected to balloting. Pre-orders must reach Noel Gifts by 11 September 2015 and will be available for collection by the public on 18 September 2015.
UPDATE: Apparently the name of president Yusof Ishak is misspelt "Yusok Ishak" in the folders carrying the notes and in an enclosed booklet. The note designs drew inspiration from significant milestones and achievements in Singapore’s history, the multiracialism that defines the nation, and the values and aspirations that underpin Singapore’s progress. The five $10 notes have a common front design and varying back designs depicting the theme ‘Vibrant Nation, Endearing Home’. Each note reflects a value or aspiration that defines this theme:

The notes themselves, however, feature the correct spelling. The Monetary Authority of Singapore says it will print stickers to cover the mistake with the correct spelling.

Philipinnes senator assails similar colors of 100- and 1,000-peso notes
14 05, 2015 08:49
According to an article on Rappler dated 14 May 2015, Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III has asked the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to explain why the 100- and 1,000-peso banknotes are almost identical to each other and state if there are plans to improve the situation. BSP Deputy Governor Diwa C. Guinigundo admitted the notes have similar colors, but said, “If we really use our eyes and read the inscription, and not just look at the color, it's easy to detect the difference between the P1,000 bill and the P100 bill."
Guinigundo said there are no plans to alter the design which were approved by the BSP Monetary Board and the president of the Philippines. However, Guinigundo said that BSP is trying to adjust the color of the bills “to make sure that blue is really blue and violet is more violet," hopefully improviing the contrast between the two.

South Korea's banknote printing firm secures Indonesia substrate contract
20 04, 2015 09:27
According to an article in The Korean Times dated 20 April 2015, the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO) is seeking customers outside of Korea to offset declines in production brought about by the introduction of a 50,000-won note (BOK B53) in 2009 and the public's increased usage of credit cards instead of cash. "KOMSCO signed a deal with the Indonesian government in February to supply 8 million 'security papers' with enhanced security functions for 880 million won over the next three years," said CEO Kim Hwa-dong. The article mentions that KOMSCO has produced banknotes for the Indonesian government in the past several years, but doesn't identify precisely which notes it printed. Curiously, all current notes in Indonesia (BI B104-B108) bear the imprint PERUM PERCETAKAN UANG RI IMP and make no mention of KOMSCO.

30 12, 2014 08:32
According to a press release dated 29 December 2014, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas announced the start of the demonetization process on 1 January 2015 for the old "New Design Series" banknotes.
The public may continue to use the NDS banknotes up to 31 December 2015 in paying and buying of goods and services and other business or financial transactions requiring the use of cash. Thereafter, the NDS banknotes will no longer be accepted for payment transactions;
From 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2016, the public may exchange with authorized financial institutions, namely universal and commercial banks, thrift banks, and rural as well as cooperative banks, their NDS banknotes with the New Generation Currency (NGC) Series at full face value, without charge (Annex 2). The public may also opt to exchange NDS banknotes with the BSP or any of its regional offices/branches around the Philippines (Annex 3);
Government institutions holding in trust NDS series which could not be exchanged during the prescribed period, such as banknotes used as evidence in a litigation case, will have to request the BSP Cash Department in writing, within the period of exchange, for a special exchange arrangement;
For Overseas Filipinos (OFs) abroad, who have in their possession NDS banknotes which could not be exchanged within the prescribed period, they may register online starting 1 October 2015 to 31 December 2015 through the BSP Website. These NDS banknotes may be exchanged with the BSP within one (1) year from date of registration; and
Starting 1 January 2017, NDS banknotes that have not been exchanged shall no longer have any monetary value, and are considered demonetized.
The demonetization of the NDS will result in the circulation of a single currency series in the country – the NGC Series. The NGC banknotes which were issued on 16 December 2010 use new and enhanced security features to protect the safety of the public against counterfeiters.

P.S. In revising the Bangladesh chapter of The Banknote Book to incorporate this new variety, I discovered that between the 18th and 20th editions of the SCWPM, Krause has renumbered its "2011 Issue" notes from Pick 52 onward, a maddening practice that I eschew. Also, it's clear that the descriptions of these notes come from The Banknote Book, albeit grossly truncated. Imitation truly is the sincerest form of flattery.

However, according to a Jakarta Post article dated 7 July 2014, the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) has urged Singaporean authorities to withdraw all such notes rather than simply discontinue printing, to more effectively help Indonesia curb rampant corruption and money-laundering activities.

According to an article on The Real Singapore dated 2 July 2014, the Monetary Authority of Singapore will no longer issue the 10,000-dollar banknote (BCCS B38) as of 1 October 2014, but it will remain legal tender. This high denomination note is being withdrawn to reduce the risk of money laundering. The move was announced as part of "Combating Financial Crime: International and National Efforts," a keynote address by Ong Chong Tee, deputy managing director (Financial Supervision), Monetary Authority of Singapore at the ABS Financial Crime Seminar on 2 July 2014.

According to an article on Tempo.co dated 19 June 2014, Indonesia plans to issue new banknotes on 17 August 2014, Independence Day. The new banknotes will have "Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia" (Republic of Indonesia) written on them, replacing the name of the current issuer, Bank Indonesia. The new banknotes will still have the same denominations as the current notes, will still have pictures of national figures, and are claimed to be harder to counterfeit.
Indonesia has been tinkering with the idea of changing its notes and revaluing its currency for years, with various plans in the past having failed to come to fruition. As such, it's probably wise not to put too much faith in this latest report.

14 11, 2013 09:31
After many years of discussion, according to this article dated 22 July 2013, it appears Bank Indonesia is moving closer to issuing redenominated notes on 1 January 2014. The new notes retain the same color schemes and depict the same people as the existing notes, although the portraits are redesigned and three zeros have been removed from the denominations. The new and old notes will circulate in parallel, and the old notes will remain valid for up to 10 years. The plan still awaits approval from the House of Representatives.

Myanmar to issue new notes honoring General Aung San and other leaders
14 11, 2013 09:19
According to various press reports dated 14 November 2013, the Central Bank of Myanmar will issue banknotes bearing the image of the country's late national hero—General Aung San—who is the father of Myanmar armed forces. The general's portrait last appeared on the 35-kyat note issued in 1986 (P63) when the country was known as Burma.
Daw Khin Saw Oo, vice governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar , made the disclosure in the parliament in reply to a proposal urging the government to circulate the country's bank notes bearing the image of General Aung San, reported Xinhua. "The central bank will issue bank notes bearing the images of country's prominent leaders, buildings, landscapes and emblems with the permission of the union government," she said.
No word yet on when the new notes will be issued.

Singapore overprinted 1997 5-dollar ship note from sheet
05 05, 2013 06:32
In January 2013, a contributor sent scans of two previously unlisted Singapore 5-dollar notes, possibily commemoratives overprinted on B21b (P35) at right front near the watermark.
The first note has a prefix of B/29 and is overprinted in red with 30 Anniversary and a small logo of the Board of Commissioners of Currency of Singapore (BCCS). It has a wide margin at left.
The second note has a prefix of B/35 and is overprinted in red with the logo of the BCCS.
From all indications, these notes were overprinted to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the BCCS, which would date them to 1997 or later.
According to another contributor, these notes were manually cut from sheets of notes and were not issued into circulation.

Macau residents flock to buy Year of the Snake banknotes
01 03, 2013 09:15
According to an article dated 14 January 2013 in the Macau Buiness Daily, Banco Nacional Ultramarino's servers crashed due to the large number of online applications to buy special banknotes marking the forthcoming lunar Year of the Snake. From 2012 to 2023, BNU and Bank of China are each authorised to issue a maximum of 20 million special notes with a face value of 10 patacas (US$1.25) to mark each lunar year. The limit was imposed at the end of last January in an effort to curb the kind of crazed speculation that took hold after the Year of the Dragon notes were put in circulation in that month. BNU and Bank of China at first intended to issue only 10 million Year of the Dragon notes each, but people formed long queues to get them.

Singapore encourages use of "good-as-new" 2-dollar notes for Hong Bao
11 01, 2013 16:31
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has issued a press release dated 10 January 2013 encouraging the public to use what it calls "good as new" 2-dollar notes for the coming Lunar New Year's "hong bao," which is the tradition of giving clean notes as gifts. In the past, MAS would print and issue an additional 50 million notes to meet the temporary demand for uncirculated notes, but this was much more than the economy actually needed to function. By encouraging the public to accept these "good as new" recirculated notes, MAS hopes to cut its production costs and is marketing the effort as good for the environment.

North Korea 2003 savings bonds confirmed
02 10, 2012 07:54
Several collectors have contacted me asking about the following items which have recently appeared on the market. According to the Korean wife of a contributor to The Banknote Book, these are bank savings bonds issued by the North Korea Central Bank in 2003. The back is divided into two parts. The left side gives instructions for the bond, stating that the bond is only good at the bank. If lost, the bank will not replace. The bond is good for one year only. At the end of the year, the bank will pay 4% interest. The bonds can't be cashed early. The right side has information for the bond: date issued, date cashed, and the last line is for the bank issuer's signature.
If you collect banknotes only, you should skip these items. If you collect all manner of paper financial instruments, feel free to add copies to your collection.

Myanmar to abolish foreign exchange certificates in 2013
28 09, 2012 09:09
According to an article on Mizzima dated 9 August 2012, Maung Maung Win, the vice chairman of the Central Bank of Myanmar, said that the bank will abolish foreign exchange certificates (FEC) “as soon as possible,” most likely in March 2013. “Earlier, it was difficult to use dollars in Burma, so we issued the FEC as an equivalent to the dollar as a type of currency to be used in Burma.” Presently, Burma allows both dollars and FECs, which are pegged at different exchange rates. Currently, the government is drafting a new foreign currency management law allowing all foreign currencies to be exchanged freely.

Philippines new 2,000-peso numismatic product confirmed
24 09, 2012 09:00
In 2000, five million 2,000-piso banknotes were printed featuing features the inauguration of President Joseph “Erap” Estrada at Barasoain Church in Bulacan on 10 June 1998. These notes were intended to be issued as legal tender in 2001, but President Estrada was ousted from office that year, so the notes were stored in the vaults of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. As of 2010, the bank was considering destroying the bulk of these unissued notes (known as “New Millennium” or “Erap” notes), saving only 50,000 pieces which would be demonetized for “historical, educational, numismatic and other purposes.” It wasn’t until 2012 that the bank began selling this numismatic product in a folder that clearly stipulates that the notes are not legal tender.

Malaysia new banknote family confirmed, to be issued 16 July 2012
16 04, 2012 07:31
Bank Negara Malaysia’s new family of banknotes were inspired by elements which distinctively define the country's diverse culture, heritage, and nature. Themed “Distinctively Malaysia,” the fourth series of Malaysian banknotes features traditional expressions in the art and craft, natural wonders, flora and fauna, economy and tradition. The notes also have enhanced security features.
On the front side, all banknote denominations in the new series retain the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Tuanku Muhammad, the national flower Rosa-sinensis hibiscus (known locally as the 'Bunga Raya') and patterns of traditional woven fabric - the “songket.”
The back side of each banknote denomination features different elements of nature, tradition, culture, flora, fauna and the economy that are distinctively Malaysian.
Commemorative sets of the new notes were sold at a premium over face value beginning 22 December 2011. The regular issue notes are scheduled to enter circulation on 16 July 2012, though the 50-ringgit denomination was issued in December 2007 and will continue to circulate. For what it’s worth, the 50-ringgit notes issued individually have 2-letter prefixes, while those issued in the matching serial number sets have 3-letter prefixes.

Indonesia redenomination plans move a step closer to implementation
07 12, 2011 10:50
According to an article in The Jakarta Post dated 7 December 2011, the government has approved Bank Indonesia’s proposal to redenominate the rupiah by eliminating three zeros. A draft law is being finalized and still needs to be approved by the Law and Human Rights Ministry, then passed by the House of Representatives.
Bank Indonesia announced that the rupiah’s redenomination would be carried out in four stages over 10 years to minimize public confusion: information campaign to alert the public (2011-2012), transition period (2013-2015), the gradual withdrawal of the “old” rupiah (2016-2018), and the use of the “new” rupiah (2019-2020).
The redenomination would mean the 1,000-rupiah banknote, the nation’s smallest denomination, would become a 1-rupiah note, but the value would remain the same (currently US$0.10).

Indonesia announces new notes to be issued in late 2011
13 08, 2011 08:03
According to an article in JakartaGlobe dated 13 August 2011, Bank Indonesia is planning to upgrade the security of its banknotes with a new series to be printed by October at the latest. The new notes will feature “rainbow printing,” which allows several colors to be printed using a single plate in specially modified equipment, resulting in a natural blending of the colors that is difficult to reproduce using commercially available printers. The only Indonesian note to currently feature rainbow printing is the 10,000-rupiah note dated 2010, shown above.
“Now we will also use rainbow printing for the Rp 20,000, Rp 50,000 and Rp 100,000 bills. This is in line with international standards,” said Muhammad Dahlan, the central bank’s director for circulation.
