On 18 December 2017, the Trans-Dniester Republican Bank introduced two different 1-ruble banknotes commemorating the 100th anniversary of the state security bodies and police, respectively. 2,500 pieces of each were issued into circulation, and an unknown number were also packaged in a folder and sold as numismatic products.

According to a press release dated 22 November 2017, Armenia introduced a new 500-dram note commemorating Noah’s Ark, the vessel that supposedly saved Noah’s family and the all the world’s animals from a biblical flood before coming to rest atop Mount Ararat in modern day Armenia. 300,000 notes were packaged in brochures and sold for 1,700 dram each.

On 11 December 2017, the Bank of Korea introduced 2.8 million new 2,000-won notes to commemorate the Winter Olympic Games to be held 9 - 25 February 2018 in PyeongChang. Not intended for circulation, individual notes were packaged in a folder and sold for 8,000 won each. The bank also sold uncut pairs and sheets of 24 notes.

According to an article in iDNES.cz dated 23 November 2017, the Česká Národní Banka has announced a competition to design a new 100-korun banknote featuring Alois Rasin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Czechoslovak currency. The new note will be gold, and will circulate in parallel with the normal issues beginning in 2019. The deadline for the competition is 19 January 2018.

According to an article in The Star dated 8 March 2012 and an article in the Daily Nation dated 7 March 2012, the Central Bank of Kenya “hereby invites individuals, institutions, institutions, organizations and professional bodies to present in writing, proposals on elements/features to be considered for incorporation in the design of the proposed new Kenyan currency banknotes and coins.” Per Article 231(4) of the constitution, the new notes may not bear the portrait of any individual. All notes in Kenya currently feature a portrait of former president Jomo Kenyatta.

The issuance of new notes is at least two years away, and even after their introduction, existing notes will likely circulate in parallel until they wear out. The bank has not ruled out changes to the colors or sizes of the new notes, and has said that “dominant Kenyan physical features, flora and fauna and key economic activities such as agriculture, tourism and manufacturing, are expected to replace these presidential portraits.”

According to an article in El Observador dated 23 May 2017, on 3 May 2017 a resolution authorized the Banco Central del Uruguay to introduce up to 10 million new 50-peso uruguayo polymer notes to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bank. No word yet on when the notes will be introduced, but the Banco Central del Uruguay was created by law 13594 of 6 July 1967 and decree on 12 September 1967.

On 3 November 2017, the Trans-Dniester Republican Bank introduced 1- and 5-ruble banknotes commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution. 2,983 pieces of each denomination were issued into circulation. 2,017 pieces of each denomination were sold as numismatic products.

According to a press release, on 1 December 2017 the Central Bank of Argentina introduced a new 1,000-peso note. This is the fourth denomination issued in a new family; only the 50- and 100-peso notes remain to be introduced.

According to a press release dated 29 November 2017, on 4 December 2017 the Bank of Lithuania will auction 500 sets of notes with an opening bid of 50 euros each. The sets are comprised of three unissued notes: 100 litu dated 1994 (B161b), 500 litu dated 1991 (B162a), and 1,000 litu dated 1991 (B163a). On 12 December 2017, 4,484 sets will be offered for sale at the average price of the auction.

According to an article dated 28 November 2017 in El Confidencial, the Banque Centrale de Mauritanie intends to introduce new notes on 1 January 2018. It is unclear if the bank will revalue the ouguiya currency unit, or simply issue notes in excess of 5,000 ouguiya, the largest denomination at present.

According to an article dated 24 November 2017 in the Standard Digital, the Central Bank of Kenya intends to introduce new coins and banknotes by the second quarter of 2018. Plans to redesign the currency to remove portraits of real people have been in the works since 2015, but have been on hold due, in part, to a lawsuit initiated by security printer De La Rue.

After a contested presidential election in 2016, long-time incumbent President Yahya Jammeh eventually stepped down on 21 January 2017, to be replaced by Adama Barrow as The Gambia's third president. According to an article in The Point dated 24 November 2017, the governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, Bakery Jammeh, indicates that in February 2018 the bank will begin replacing notes featuring the portrait of former President Jammeh (B228 - B234) with reprints of the preceding issues, the so-called "Family" notes bearing images of typical Gambians. These notes will be used throughout 2018, giving the bank time to design and print an entirely new series of notes with the latest security features. Ironically, history seems to be repeating itself. Following the overthrow of President Jawara in a coup d’état led by then Lieutenant Jammeh on 22 July 1994, the bank replaced notes featuring Jawara's portrait (B201 - B212) with the original "Family" notes (B213 - B216) in 1996.

On 22 November 2017, the central bank unveiled the following designs for the third family of notes, to be introduced into circulation one year later, on the 25th anniversary of the dram, the national currency. These notes were designed by Edward Kurginyan, Vardan Vardanyan, and Suren Simonyan, but considerable changes are likely to be appear on the actual notes printed by Giesecke & Devrient, Germany. The new notes will continue to circulate in parallel with the existing notes. No new 100,000-dram note is planned.

These notes commemorate the 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games, held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan from 17 to 27 September 2017. The front of each note is like the preceding issue, but with the addition of the Ashgabat 2017 logo on the watermark area at left.The back of each note depicts a new architectural building erected in the Turkmen capital in honor of the games. Anti-counterfeiting features have also been enhanced. The games logo is “executed by a special press method,” and the two lowest denominations’ nominal figures are printed in OVI, and on higher denominations printed with SPARK Live. These new notes are legal tender, and circulate in parallel with notes dated 2009, 2012, and 2014.

Banky Foiben'i Madagasikara introduced these four smaller denominations on 18 September 2017, completing the new family that premiered on 17 July 2017. According to a press release dated 20 July 2017, Governor Veerathai Santiprabhob announced the Bank of Thailand’s intention to issue a new family of banknotes designed to commemorate King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The new notes are like the preceding issues, but with different backs.

From 28 September to 18 October 2017, Bank of China is taking orders for a new 100-dollar note to commemorate the bank’s 100th anniversary of its presence in Hong Kong. Although legal tender, the notes aren’t intended for circulation. 2,900,000 notes were offered as numismatic products packaged in a folder for HK$288. An additional 300,000 sets of three uncut notes in a folder for HK$988. Finally, 40,000 uncut sheets of 30 notes each offered for HK$13,888 each. Profits from the sale of the notes were donated to charitable organizations in Hong Kong.

On 25 August 2017, the Banco Central de São Tomé e Príncipe unveiled six new banknotes and five new coins as part of the bank’s 25th anniversary celebrations and redenomination efforts. The notes were designed and printed by De La Rue to showcase wildlife and include innovative features to make them secure against counterfeiting. The four largest denominations are protected with Depth Image holograms and StarChrome windowed security threads. The two smallest denominations are printed on Safeguard polymer substrate. The new notes are expected to be introduced on 1 January 2018.

According to a press release, the Maldives Monetary Authority introduced a new 5-rufiyaa polymer banknote in July 2017. This denomination was supposed to be replaced by a coin after the bank introduced its new note family on 26 January 2016, but the bank has reversed its decision and issued a new note instead.

On 24 July 2017, the Central Bank of Swaziland began issuing a green 10-lilangeni note to reduce confusion between the preceding blue 10-lilangeni note and South Africa’s blue 100-rand note (B770), which also circulates in Swaziland. Aside from the color change and addition of the text VISION 2022 (a reference to social programs designed to transform Swaziland into a “first world” nation by that year) vertically at right front and left back, the note is identical in design to the preceding issues. However, there are discrepancies in the bank’s own promotional material as to whether security and sight-impaired features have changed.

Because the current 200-lilangeni note is also green, that denomination will be redesigned to avoid confusion with this new note. The 100-lilangeni is also expected to be redesigned for unspecified reasons. These larger denominations are scheduled for introduction on 1 January 2018.

On 18 July 2017, the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austin, the Bank of England unveiled a 10-pound note featuring the 19th century novelist. It is the first BOE note with a tactile feature to help the sight impaired. The note will be introduced into circulation on 14 September 2017. It will circulate in parallel with the preceding paper note, which will be withdrawn in the first half of 2018.

According to a press release dated 5 July 2017, Brunei and Singapore have both issued new 50-dollar polymer notes to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement. Brunei introduced one million notes, and Singapore introduced two million notes, all at face value. Banks in both countries offered sets of notes in complimentary folders. The commemorative notes were jointly designed by Abdul Ajihis Haji Terawih, Eng Siak Loy, and Weng Ziyan. A total of 50,000 sets of Brunei and Singapore notes bearing matching serial numbers and CIA prefixes were sold for S$300 (US$220) each beginning 12 July 2017. Uncut sheets of 3, 8, and 40 notes were also packaged for sale as numismatic products.

According to an AP report dated 2 July 2017, the Central Bank of Syria introduced a 2,000-pound note depicting President Bashar Assad on front and the back depicts the People's Council of Syria inside the Parliament Building in Damascus, Syria. These notes appear to have been printed by Goznak several years ago and have been introduced because the Syrian pound has crashed in value due to the civil war in Syria.

There are various reports out of war-torn Yemen of a new 500-rial note, supposedly printed in Russia and intended for circulation by the "official" Central Bank of Yemen now located in the southern city of Aden.


Meanwhile, a competing bank in the northern city of Sana'a is rumored to have ordered new 5,000-rial notes, also from Russia. A truck full of the new notes was captured by tribal gunmen in the al rayon desert east of al Jawf province.

According to an article in Myanmar Business Today dated 13 June 2017, the Central Bank of Myanmar plans to introduce new 5,000- and 10,000-kyat notes like the current issues (B117 and B118, respectively), but with enhanced security features to combat counterfeiting. The new notes have new watermarks, serial numbers, and security threads. No word yet on the timing of the introduction.

According to a press release dated 8 June 2017, new 50- and 100-dollar notes expected to be introduced in 2018 will be printed on Durasafe, a paper-polymer-paper composite substrate produced by Landqart. According to other sources, these denominations will reportedly be printed by Canadian Banknote Company using Crane’s Rapid windowed security thread. The 1- and 5-dollar notes are reported to be printed on Louisenthal’s Hybrid substrate.

According to a press release dated 10 May 2017, the Swiss National Bank has unveiled the design of the new 20-franc note to be introduced on 17 May 2017. This is the second denomination in a new family to be released, following the 50-franc note which recently won the IBNS Bank Note of the Year 2016 award. Existing notes remain legal tender.



"The 20-franc note focuses on Switzerland’s creativity – expressed by light, the note’s key motif. Core design elements in the new series are the hand and the globe, which appear on every denomination." The new note remains red, but is reduced in size for easier handling.

The next denomination due for release is the 10-franc note slated for 18 October 2017. The remaining notes in the series will be issued subsequently at half-yearly or yearly intervals.

According to a press release dated 18 April 2017, the Reserve Bank of Fiji has unveiled a new 7-dollar note and 50-cent coin commemorating Fiji Rugby 7s gold medal win at the 2016 Summer Olympics (XXXI) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5 August to 21 August 2016.

Despite the odd denomination, the note is legal tender. Two million notes were printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire and one million coins were struck by the Royal Canadian Mint. The notes and coins were introduced into circulation on 21 April 2017.

According to a press release dated 30 March 2017, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku, has resigned "for personal reasons" after exactly one year in office. According to an article on Bloomberg, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed Ernest Addison as the nation’s new central bank governor. Issahaku's signature appears on only the new commemorative 5-cedi note (B153) introduced 4 March 2017.

According to a press release, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank introduced new 2,000- and 5,000-forint notes into circulation on 1 March 2017, although they were declared legal tender from 15 November 2016. Existing notes of the same denominations will circulate in parallel until 31 July 2017, after which time they will be withdrawn, but will not be demonetized until 31 July 2037. A new 1,000-forint note is planned for the second half of 2017.

The new notes have enhanced security features.

According to a News24 article dated 16 February 2017, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is supposedly planning to introduce new 10- and 20-dollar "bond" notes. This same article incorrectly indicates that 1- and 2-dollar bond notes were introduced in November 2016. In reality, only the 2-dollar note was issued last year, and there is no 1-dollar bond note, though there is supposedly a 5-dollar bond note recently introduced but as of yet unconfirmed.

According to a press release dated 15 February 2017, the Bank of England acknowledged the concerns of some regarding trace amounts of animal-derived tallow in the production of the polymer substrate used in the 5-pound note introduced on 13 September 2016, as well as the 10-pound note scheduled for September 2017 introduction. However, the bank has decided not to withdraw the notes nor stop their introduction because to do so would incur substantial costs, but changes may be made for the new 20-pound note due for introduction in 2020.

According to an article in Business Day Ghana dated 12 February 2017, the Bank of Ghana plans to introduce a new legal tender 5-cedi note on 4 March 2017 to commemorate the bank's 60th anniversary. On 26 January 2017, the bank issued a press release confirming the new 5-cedi note while also categorically denying rumors of new 30-, 100-, and 200-cedi notes circulating on social media.

According to an article on Ecns.cn dated 14 February 2017, the China Bank Note Printing & Minting Corporation, China has printed and delivered to the Nepal Rastra Bank 84 million 1,000-rupee notes, the first of three deliveries totalling 200 million notes. Although changes to this denomination had been planned, expediency demanded printing the notes without revision. The total order cost US$3.76 million, less than half the cost paid to the undisclosed printer of the immediately preceding issues.

According to an article on myRepública also published on 14 February 2017, the government has concluded it would be more beneficial to print security documents and banknotes internally, and the Department of Printing will submit the proposed bill after necessary amendments at the Ministry of Information and Communications.

According to a TASS article dated 14 February 2017, in the first quarter of 2018, the Bank of Russia will issue a 100-ruble banknote dedicated to 2018 World Cup, and it will be Russia's first polymer banknote. The bank also intends to use polymer when producing either the new 200- or 2,000-ruble notes with symbols of Sevastopol and the Far East.

According to a poster, the Banco Central del Uruguay introduced a new series F 200-peso note (B555) on 29 December 2016. This note is like preceding issues (B548), but new series, new date, new signatures, new printer imprint, and several significant changes to the security features, including denomination as registration device, holographic windowed security thread, translucent features, map of Uruguay in OVI, iridescent stripes, and intaglio marks for the sight impaired.

Reportedly the 100-peso note has also been revised.

The 120 x 60 mm dark brown 10-złoty note will feature Prince Mieszko I on the front, dinar coins on the back, and is dated 15 WRZEŚNIA (September) 2016. 1 billion pieces will be introduced beginning 27 February 2017.

The 126 x 63 mm purple and pink 20-złoty note will feature King Bolesław I Chrobry on the front, coins on the back, and is dated 15 WRZEŚNIA (September) 2016. 800 million pieces will be introduced beginning 20 January 2017.
