On 9 December 2019, the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago introduced a new 100-dollar note on polymer substrate with significantly enhanced security. The bank intends to expand the range of polymer notes to the other denominations in 2020. The polymer notes will circulate in parallel with the preceding paper notes.

Ghana announces new 100- and 200-cedi notes (B160 and B161)

Due to “sustained periods of high inflation and the perennial depreciation of the currency,” on 29 November 2019 the Bank of Ghana announced a new 2-cedi coin, as well as new 100- and 200-cedi notes. Existing 1- and 2-cedi notes remain legal tender, though these denominations will be gradually replaced by coins to reduce costs.

Sao Tome and Principe new 5-, 10-, and 200-dobra notes reported for introduction in 2020

According to a TélaNón article dated 27 November 2019, the Banco Central de São Tomé e Príncipe and De La Rue met to discuss replacing the defective 200-dobra note of 2016, which had been removed from circulation due to security flaws. Furthermore, the 5- and 10-dobra notes printed on polymer could not withstand the hot, humid climate and will be replaced with new notes printed on paper with better security features and durability. The new notes are expected to be introduced in the first half of 2020.

De La Rue announces financial results

According to a press release dated 26 November 2019, security printer De La Rue announced its half year results for the six months ending 28 September 2019.
Clive Vacher, Chief Executive Officer of De La Rue, said:
“The business has experienced an unprecedented period of change with the Chairman, CEO, senior independent director and most of the executive team leaving or resigning in the period. This has led to inconsistency in both quality and speed of execution. The new Board is working to stabilise the management team, which we believe will take some time.
“At the same time, we have seen significant changes since the start of the year in the market for Currency, including pricing pressure as a result of reduced overspill demand. This has had a material impact on volumes and profitability in H1 2019/20 and it will also take time for the currency market to normalise. Our Authentication business continues to show good growth and provides some degree of balance to the Currency headwinds, while demand for polymer substrate is also exceeding our expectations.
“In response, we are reviewing our cost base and will make the structural changes that will further strengthen our competitiveness in a challenging market. We continue to focus on building momentum in the higher-margin security feature market and continue to innovate to improve our position in this fast-growing area.
“Between now and the end of calendar Q1 2020, we will complete a full review of the business and design a comprehensive turnaround plan for the Company. In the meantime, we have already identified and started to implement the urgent actions needed to stabilise the business and allow us to complete the review. With strong emphasis on cost control and cash management, coupled with a focus on innovation and reversing the revenue decline, we will become a leaner, more efficient Company and drive shareholder value.”

Ukraine new 50- and 200-hryvnia notes (B855 and B857) to be introduced late 2019, early 2020

According to a press release dated 26 November 2019, the National Bank of Ukraine plans to introduce a new 50-hryvnia note (B855) on 20 December 2019, followed by a new 200-hryvnia note (B857) on 25 February 2020, thereby completing the new note family which began with the introduction of the 100-hryvnia note (B856) introduced in 2015.
“The updated banknotes inherit the design features of the new-generation 20-, 100-, 500-, and 1,000-hryvnia bills. They retain the main images depicted on the previously issued 50- and 200-hryvnia bills and are similar in size and color range.
At the same time, both of the upgraded banknotes carry enhanced security features. In particular, the bills have more pronounced embossed elements, including features for visually impaired individuals. The UV and IR protection of the bills has been improved. The serial number, printed in black using a font where characters vary in height, runs vertically down the right edge of the bill’s reverse.
In addition, two innovative security features have been added to the upgraded 200-hryvnia banknote and the new-generation 100-, 500-, and 1,000-hryvnia bills. One of these security features is an optically variable element known as SPARK, which is made in the shape of a stylized image of a water lily, and changes colors as the banknote is tilted. The other security element is a window thread that features the denomination and the hryvnia symbol. The thread produces a dynamic light effect where the background image moves in a different direction as the banknote is tilted.”

Scotland BOS new 20-pound polymer notes unveiled

According to an article in The Sunday Post dated 7 November 2019 and an article on YourMoney.com, the Bank of Scotland has unveiled the designs of two new 20-pound notes dated 1st June 2019, the fronts of which both feature a portrait of poet Sir Walter Scott. The back of the regular issue 20-pound note depicts the Forth Bridge while the back of the commemorative note depicts the Queensferry Crossing. Both notes are printed by De La Rue on polymer (Guardian) substrate and measure 139 x 73 mm, consistent with the new reduced-size notes from the Bank of England and other UK banks also expected to be introduced in early 2020.

According to an article on Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation dated 4 November 2019, the government has filed statutory instruments to allow the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to introduce new 2- and 5-dollar notes that are like the preceding bond notes issued in 2016, but without the words BOND NOTE at upper right front/back. The notes are expected to be introduced 11 November 2019 and will eventually replace the bond notes currently in circulation.

Central African States preparing new family of notes

According to an article in Business in Cameroon dated 7 October 2019, the Banque des États de l’Afrique Centrale is preparing a new family of notes. The information was revealed in Resolution N°7 of the ordinary meeting of the Central African Monetary Union (UMAC)’s ministerial council, which was held on 2 October 2019, at the bank’s headquarters in Yaoundé, Cameroon.The new notes will replace the current notes which have been in circulation since 24 November 2003.

On 12 September 2019, the Bank of Albania unveiled a new series of banknotes that are like the preceding issues, but with refreshed designs and colors, as well as new security features. Although not shown at the unveiling, the new 10,000-lek note is expected to have the theme of the national anthem and its author, poet Aleksandër Stavre Drenova, known by the pen name Asdreni. Existing notes will continue to circulate in parallel as the six denominations are introduced into circulation at staggered intervals from 2019 to 2022.

According to a BusinessFirst article dated 20 August 2019, Ulster Bank has unveiled the design of its new 20-pound polymer note. Building on the design theme of “Living in Nature,” this vertical note focuses on Northern Ireland as a “dwelling place,” and features “street entertainers and their appreciative audience, reflecting local music and culture, as well as tiles, brickwork and patterns inspired by NI’s ubiquitous red-brick tenement buildings. Other elements of the note are drawn from the ornate decoration found on and in famous public buildings, corporate architecture and domestic homes in Derry, Belfast and other cities in Northern Ireland. The note is also incorporating Derry~Londonderry’s much-loved Hallowe’en celebrations into the security features of the note – under a UV light, skeletons and Leisler’s bat – the largest type of bat in Ireland – can be seen.”

According to a DW article dated 31 July 2019, the Iranian government has approved a plan to remove four zeroes from the rial and rename the currency the toman, a former superunit of official currency that was in circulation until 1925. According to a press release dated 24 June 2019, the Banco Central de Nicaragua introduced new 500- and 1,000-córdoba banknotes printed on polymer substrate on 8 July 2019.
The new notes have the following attributes: high durability, which will imply substantial savings in the issuance of tickets; greater difficulty of falsification, since it incorporates state-of-the-art security measures; and kindness to the environment, because once destroyed, the waste material of the tickets will be recyclable. Its dimensions are 156 mm in length and 67 mm in height, with colors and designs similar to those of current circulation. It should be noted that with this new issuance, the BCN completes the entire polymer substrate banknote family started in 2009, with which Nicaragua will be among the first countries to have all of its denominations printed on polymer substrate.
The 500- and 1,000-córdoba banknotes currently in circulation, printed on cotton paper substrate, will retain their value and continue to circulate next to the new banknotes, until they are gradually withdrawn, according to their deterioration.

According to an Invest in Albania article dated 3 July 2019, the Bank of Albania plans to introduce a new family of banknotes starting with new 200- and 5,000-lek notes in the fall of 2019, and eventually including 500-, 1,000-, 2,000-, and 10,000-lek notes. All notes will have the same themes as existing issues (the new denomination of 10,000 leke will have the theme of the national anthem and its author, the poet Asdreni), but completely redesigned and with enhanced security features.

According to a CNN article dated 1 July 2019, the Economic Community of West African States (consisting of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo) has adopted the name “eco” for a planned single currency to be used in the region. Originally intended to be launched in 2000, the common currency has been postponed multiple times, and the newest target date is 2020.

According to a press release dated 5 June 2019, this 20-dollar note commemorates Singapore’s bicentennial. The back of the note showcases eight pioneering individuals who were part of a broad cast who arrived from different lands and made significant contributions to nation building in diverse areas ranging from education, culture, and community service to sports and defending Singapore. This note was designed by Eng Siak Loy and Weng Ziyan. Four million notes will be introduced into circulation at face value, packaged with a special folder. Additionally, 5,000 uncut sheets of three notes will be sold as numismatic products.

Australia new 50-dollar note (B233a) contains typo in microprint

According to various sources, the new 50-dollar note (B233a) issued on 18 October 2018 contains a typo in the microprinting. Specifically, the back of the note contains Edith Cowan’s first speech to parliament in microtext above her shoulder, in which the word “responsibility” is repeatedly misspelled as “responsibilty” without the third “i” at the end of the word. The Reserve Bank of Australia has acknowledged the error and plans to fix same in the next print run.

According to a press release dated 12 April 2019, the Centrale Bank van Aruba confirmed that it is “working on a project to issue a new series of florin banknotes to replace the current series. The new series florin banknotes will have a complete new design and contain the latest security features. To realize this important project the CBA has worked closely with local artists, local and international experts, and the internationally renowned banknote producer Crane Currency, and thereby meet as much as possible the high international standards. On May 2, 2019 the CBA will inform the Aruban public about the new series of banknotes in order to prepare for its introduction, which will take place during the month of June 2019.”

According to an article in the Guyana Times dated 10 February 2019, the Bank of Guyana plans to introduce a 1,000-dollar note with enhanced security features on 4 March 2019. The design is like the current note (B117), but the holographic stripe is replaced by a 6-mm wide blue RAPID security thread with the denomination and the Victoria Regia Lily, the national flower. Furthermore, the windowed security thread on the back of the existing note is replaced by a solid security thread.

On 9 April 2019, Japan’s Ministry of Finance announced plans to introduce a new series of notes in the first half of 2024. The new series will consists of three denominations (the existing 2,000-yen note is not being replaced) featuring bacteriologist Kitasato Shibasaburō on the 1,000-yen note; Tsuda Umeko, founder of Tsuda Juku University and the first Japanese woman to study in the US, on the 5,000-yen note; and industrialist Shibusawa Eiichi (who appears on Korea B201 - B206), on the 10,000-yen note. All three notes will feature 10-digit serial numbers, 3D holographic elements, elaborate watermarks, and larger number to aid the sight-impaired. Existing notes will continue to circulate in parallel for three to four years.

According to a Coin World article dated 15 March 2019, “The firm F + W media, a major periodical and book publisher whose titles include Numismatic News, Bank Note Reporter, and the seminal references Standard Catalog of World Coins and Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reconcile $105.2 million in outstanding debt. In its March 10 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in Wilmington, F + W Media cites just $2.5 million in cash on hand. The company plans to remain in operation while it plans liquidation of its holdings.”
According to Amazon, the 25th edition of the SCWPM will be released on 2 April 2019, but F + W is hoping to sell its magazine and book divisions in their entirety, not individual titles, so the future of the SCWPM is uncertain at this point.

According to a press release dated 5 March 2019, the Swiss National Bank began issuing the new 1,000-franc note (B360) on 13 March 2019.
“The inspiration behind the new banknote series is ‘The many facets of Switzerland’. Each denomination depicts a typically Swiss characteristic, which is then illustrated graphically using a range of elements. The 1000-franc note focuses on Switzerland’s communicative flair, as expressed by language, the note’s key motif. Core design elements are the hand and the globe, which appear on every denomination in the new series.
As with the banknotes currently in circulation, the ninth series consists of six denominations; the colour scheme, too, remains the same. Accordingly, the main colour of the new 1000- franc note is purple. However, the format has been modified – the new notes are smaller and thus easier to handle. The innovative combination of complex security features and sophisticated design provides state-of-the-art anti-counterfeiting protection.”

Sudan new possible date anomaly (B410d) reported

The Arabic date ٢٠١٧ (2017) on front of 20-pound notes (B410d) is usually 2-mm tall (top), but a 3-mm tall date (bottom) has been observed on at least one note with prefix ER and serial number in 9000000 range. More examples are requested to determine if this anomaly is a true variety or perhaps a counterfeit.

According to a press release dated 7 February 2019, these notes have new security features and better quality to reduce wear. The design of the front of the 500-franc note is entirely new, and the overall color has been changed to brown to help distinguish it from the 1,000-franc note.

Philippines central bank governor dies on 23.02.2019

According to a press release, the Monetary Board announced that Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor and Chairman of the Monetary Board Nestor A. Espenilla, Jr. peacefully passed away on 23 February 2019 surrounded by members of his family. The Governor, 60, had been undergoing treatment for cancer for more than a year. In a special meeting held on the same day, the Monetary Board designated Deputy Governor Maria Almasara Cyd Tuaño-Amador as BSP Officer-in-Charge effective immediately until such time that President Rodrigo Duterte shall have designated an OIC or appointed a successor.
Expect to see new signature varieties on Philippines banknotes after a new governor is appointed.

The Česká Národní Banka held a competition to design a new 100-korun banknote featuring Alois Rasin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Czechoslovak koruna. On 1 March 2018, the bank announced its decision to approve the following design submitted by painter Eva Hašková. The new note was sold at a premium to face value beginning on 31 January 2019.

According to a press release dated February 2019, First Trust Bank will cease issuing its own banknotes and will be replacing them with Bank of England notes as they are withdrawn from circulation. The First Trust Bank notes can continue to be used until 30 June 2022, after which time they will cease to be legal tender.

Mongolia new 5,000-tögrög note reported for introduction Q1 2019

According to a press release dated 28 December 2018, the Mongol Bank intends to introduce a revised 5,000-tögrög note in the first quarter of 2019. The note will have new security features, including the Soyombo symbol as 3D SPARK inkjet element. Preceding notes will continue to circulate in parallel.

This 65-page catalog covers notes issued by the Ministerul de Finanțe (Ministry of Finance) from 1877 to 1952, the Banca Nationala a Romaniei (National Bank of Romania) from 1880 to present, the Banca Generalâ Romȃnă (Romanian General Bank) in 1917, the Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Bank (Austro-Hungarian Bank) in 1919, and the Comandamentul Armatei Rosii (Red Army Command) in 1944. Sudan reportedly to introduce 100-, 200-, and 500-pound notes in mid-January 2019

According to an AA article dated 2 January 2019, the Central Bank of Sudan plans to introduce in mid-January 100-, 200-, and 500-pound notes for the first time to ease a liquidity crisis exacerbated by inflation which reached a record of 68.93 percent in December 2018.

Iran new 500,000-rial cheque unveiled 01.01.2019

According to an Iran Front Page article dated 2 January 2019, the Central Bank of Iran has unveiled a new 500,000-rial note design. The new note is similar to the same denomination issued in 2014 (B294a), but orange in color, repositioned vignettes on front, and Mount Damavand on back. Most notably, the denomination is expressed as 50 in the lower right corner front/back, an indication that the CBI intends to eventually revalue the rial by removing four zeroes.

Ukraine new 100-hryvnia numismatic product (BNP808a) confirmed

On 17 December 2018, the National Bank of Ukraine introduced a souvenir 100-hryvnia note commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Ukrainian Revolution. 100,000 notes were offered for sale at 70 hryven each.

Zambia new 10- to 50-kwacha notes (B165 - B169) confirmed

These notes are like the preceding issues, but with upgraded security features. Specifically, the 20-, 50-, and 100-kwacha notes have a SPARK Live feature added at lower right front and a 5-mm wide windowed security thread. The 10-kwacha note has a new windowed security thread, and the 2- and 5-kwacha notes have different images in glossy varnish with blind embossing. All denominations have tactile diagonal lines for the visually impaired intaglio printed at center left and right front. The 5-, 10-, and 20-kwacha notes also have new printer imprints at lower right back.

As of 1 January 2019, all chapters of The Banknote Book now include a Revisions list at the end of the document. The list of revisions includes all significant changes to each chapter from July 2015 onward (the date when numbering was simplified).
