China new 1-, 10-, 20-, and 50-yuan notes (B4118 - B4122) confirmed introduced 30.08.2019

On 29 April 2019, the People’s Bank of China announced that on 30 August 2019 it would introduce new notes like the preceding issues (except the 5-yuan note), but with redrawn vignettes, new date (2019), and enhanced anti-counterfeiting features including denomination as registration device and additional Omron rings on all denominations, as well as windowed security threads, denomination in SPARK, and vertical serial numbers at right front on all but the 1-yuan note.

According to a press release dated 10 May 2018, Japan’s Ministry of Finance changed the color of the serial numbers on 1,000-yen notes from brown (B365b) to blue (B365c) starting on 18 March 2019.

Japan to issue new 1,000-, 5,000-, and 10,000-yen notes (B368 - B370) in 2024

On 9 April 2019, Japan’s Ministry of Finance announced plans to introduce a new series of notes in the first half of 2024. The new series will consists of three denominations (the existing 2,000-yen note is not being replaced) featuring bacteriologist Kitasato Shibasaburō on the 1,000-yen note; Tsuda Umeko, founder of Tsuda Juku University and the first Japanese woman to study in the US, on the 5,000-yen note; and industrialist Shibusawa Eiichi (who appears on Korea B201 - B206), on the 10,000-yen note. All three notes will feature 10-digit serial numbers, 3D holographic elements, elaborate watermarks, and larger number to aid the sight-impaired. Existing notes will continue to circulate in parallel for three to four years.

Russia new 100-ruble polymer World Cup commemorative note reported for 2018

According to a TASS article dated 14 February 2017, in the first quarter of 2018, the Bank of Russia will issue a 100-ruble banknote dedicated to 2018 World Cup, and it will be Russia's first polymer banknote. The bank also intends to use polymer when producing either the new 200- or 2,000-ruble notes with symbols of Sevastopol and the Far East.

Russia considering 100-ruble World Cup 2018 commemorative note

According to a press release dated 25 July 2016, the Russian security printer Goznak has prepared six different designs for a 100-ruble banknote to commemorate the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, to be held in various locations (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Samara, Saransk, Sochi, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Yekaterinburg) from 14 June to 15 July. The commemorative note is expected to be printed on either polymer or a composite substrate to help distinguish it from regular issue banknotes. Printing is expected to begin in mid-2017 with the note introduced in 2018.

Russia new 200- and 2,000-ruble notes reported for late 2017 introduction

According to a press release dated 12 April 2016, the Bank of Russia plans to introduce new 200- and 2,000-ruble notes by the end of 2017. These entirely new denominations are expected to enhance the convenience of cash payments, and will save time when paying for goods and services.

The current Russian banknotes depict the characters of Russian cities and regions, and this tradition will continue with the new notes, but for the first time the Russian public will get to vote on the new designs in the summer of 2016.

South Korea banknote printer seeking more overseas contracts

According to an article in Korea Times dated 24 June 2014, Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corp. (KOMSCO) has seen its production volume halved over the past five years, and hopes to utilize excess capacity by obtaining contracts to print banknotes for other countries. Countries for which KOMSCO has produced or is producing "currencies" (may include coins, not just banknotes) include China, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Libya, Peru, Switzerland, Thailand, and Vietnam. Last year KOMSCO won an order from Peru to produce 305 million 50-nuevo sole notes, with delivery to be completed by the end of June 2014.

Russia not planning polymer banknotes

According to an article in Pravda dated 24 June 2014, Goznak does not plan to introduce polymer banknotes in Russia. Goznak General Director Arkady Trachuk said, "From the point of view of duration, price and quality, paper money is usually more effective than plastic money," but admitted that polymer notes have advantages in countries with hot and humid climates.

Russia adopts symbol for ruble currency

According to an article on Lenta.ru dated 11 December 2013, the board of directors of the Bank of Russia has adopted a lowercase barred "p" as the symbol for Russia's currency, the ruble. The bank intends to mint coins with the new symbol in 2014 and it will also appear on future banknotes.
