India plans to varnish 100-rupee notes on trial basis in 2019 - 2020

According to its annual report for 2018 - 2019, the Reserve Bank of India agenda for 2019 - 2020 includes plans to introduce varnished 100-rupee notes “on a field trial basis in order to increase the life of Indian banknotes.” Additionally, the bank “will develop a mechanism/device for aiding the visually impaired in identification of denomination of banknotes.”

According to a 5 March 2019 article on United News of Bangladesh, on 7 March 2019 Bangladesh Bank plans to introduce a new 100-taka note like the existing issues (B352), but with a varnish coating to increase longevity.

Pakistan denies rumors that 5,000-rupee notes are being discontinued

According to a press release dated 10 September 2018, "Apropos the rumors circulating on social media regarding discontinuation of Rs.5000 banknote, SBP categorically rejects all such rumors and requests the general public to pay no heed to such disinformation.
It is further clarified that SBP Act, 1956 clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of different institutions including SBP for issuance, circulation and demonetization or cancellation of banknotes. Specifically, section 25 of the Act requires a recommendation of SBP Board of Directors before the Federal Government makes any decision about the demonetization or cancellation of banknotes. The SBP Board has not submitted any recommendation for demonetization or discontinuation of Rs.5000 or any other banknote to Federal Government or Cabinet. Further, in case of demonetization of any bank note, SBP announces the same well in advance and provides ample time to public to change the currency under demonetization process. SBP places all such announcements on its website and circulates the same through its social media platforms as well. The public is therefore advised not to pay heed to any such rumors which are aimed at creating unnecessary hype and anxiety. They may also verify announcements from SBP Website (www.sbp.org.pk), Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/StateBankPakistan) and Twitter account before forwarding the same to their contacts."

According to a press release, the Maldives Monetary Authority introduced a new 5-rufiyaa polymer banknote in July 2017. This denomination was supposed to be replaced by a coin after the bank introduced its new note family on 26 January 2016, but the bank has reversed its decision and issued a new note instead.

According to a press release dated 2 May 2017, the federal government has appointed Riaz Riazuddin as Acting Governor State Bank of Pakistan with immediate effect, for a period not exceeding three months or till appointment of a regular Governor.

Nepal confirms China printed new 1,000-rupee notes (B286b)

According to an article on Ecns.cn dated 14 February 2017, the China Bank Note Printing & Minting Corporation, China has printed and delivered to the Nepal Rastra Bank 84 million 1,000-rupee notes, the first of three deliveries totalling 200 million notes. Although changes to this denomination had been planned, expediency demanded printing the notes without revision. The total order cost US$3.76 million, less than half the cost paid to the undisclosed printer of the immediately preceding issues.
According to an article on myRepública also published on 14 February 2017, the government has concluded it would be more beneficial to print security documents and banknotes internally, and the Department of Printing will submit the proposed bill after necessary amendments at the Ministry of Information and Communications.

The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan issued a 1,000-ngultrum banknote to commemorate the birth of His Royal Highness The Gyalsey, Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, which took place on 5 February 2016. 3,420,000 notes were printed and released into circulation beginning 21 September 2016.

In a surprise move, India demonetized all 500- and 1,000-rupee notes as of 9 November 2016, “to tackle counterfeiting Indian banknotes, to effectively nullify black money hoarded in cash, and curb funding of terrorism with fake notes.” The old notes can be deposited at any RBI branch with valid proof of identity. The first of the “Mahatma Gandhi (New)” series to be issued are 500- and 2,000-rupee notes.

According to various news reports, but not yet verified by any press release or official announcement, the Reserve Bank of India plans to issue a 2,000-rupee note, double the face value of the current largest denomination (B297). The notes are already printed and awaiting introduction.

According to a press release dated 13 April 2016, the Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue 10-rupee banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005, with the inset letter L, bearing the signature of Dr. Raghuram G.Rajan, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, and the year of printing ‘2016‘ printed on the reverse of the banknote.
These notes are like the current 10-rupee notes (B286), except that the numerals in both the number panels will be so-called "novel" numbers, in ascending size from left to right.

According to a press release dated 22 September 2015, the Reserve Bank of India issued new 500- and 1,000-rupee notes like P106 and P107, respectively, but with novel "ascending size" serial numbers, "angular bleed lines" at the edges, and bigger identification marks. The RBI very recently introduced these denominations with novel numbering, but has now added "two more features to aid visually impaired in easy identification of banknotes part from securing them against counterfeiting."

Maldives new note family unveiled

This new family of banknotes is printed on DLR’s Safeguard polymer substrate. The first denomination—a commemorative 5,000-rufiyaa note (BNP201)—was introduced on 26 July 2015. The other circulating denominations—10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 rufiyaa—were unveiled 1 November 2015 and are expected to be introduced into circulation from December 2015 onwards (the existing 5-rufiyaa note will be replaced by a coin). The Maldives Monetary Authority held a design competition and selected local artist Abdullah Nashaath to ensure that the new family, called Randhihafaheh, has an authentically Maldivian look.

Pakistan denies plans to introduce 10,000-rupee note

According to a press release dated 18 August 2015, the State Bank of Pakistan "categorically denies the news item reported in a section of press and electronic/social media regarding its plans to issue new banknote of Rs. 10,000/- The SBP has no plans whatsoever for issuance of any higher denomination banknote as seven denominations of existing banknotes are adequately meeting the business/transactional needs of the economy." At present the largest denomination remains the 5,000-rupee notes (B239), worth approximately US$49.

According to the Maldives Monetary Authority press release dated 26 July 2015, the MMA has introduced a 5,000-rufiyaa note (US$330) commemorating the 50th anniversary of independence. This is the first denomination in a new family of seven banknotes printed on DLR’s Safeguard polymer substrate. The other circulating denominations—10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 rufiyaa—will follow from October 2015 onwards (the existing 5-rufiyaa note will be replaced by a coin).

According to a press release dated 25 June 2015, the Reserve Bank of India has introduced a 100-rupee note like P105, but with novel serial numbering wherein the size of each digit increases from left to right. "The new numbering pattern will be introduced in a phased manner in all other denominations," though no dates have been announced for the introduction of the other notes.

According to a State Bank of Pakistan press release dated 17 June 2015, "As per Federal Government’s Gazette Notification dated 4th June, 2015, the old design banknotes will cease to be legal tender with effect from 1st December 2016. Therefore, it has now been decided to phase out all remaining old design banknotes of Rs 10, 50, 100 & 1000. The Rs 5 banknote and the old design Rs 500 banknote have already been demonetized.
"It is worth mentioning that the State Bank of Pakistan issued a new design banknote series which started with the issuance of Rs 20 denomination banknote in 2005 (SBP B32a) to improve the security, durability and aesthetic quality of banknotes. The process of issuance of complete series of new design banknotes comprising eight denominations (Rs 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000) was completed in 2008 (B230-B239).
"The commercial/microfinance banks will accept the old design banknotes of Rs 10, 50, 100 and 1000 and exchange the same with the new design banknotes and coins of all denominations up to 30th November 2016 only. However, SBP BSC field offices will continue to accept the old design banknotes of Rs 10, 50, 100 & 1000 from general public up to December 31, 2021.

Sri Lanka's central bank governor resigns

According to a press release dated 9 January 2015, "Mr. Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has informed His Excellency the President that he wishes to resign from the post of Governor with immediate effect, in order that the new President may appoint a new Governor.
Mr. Cabraal was appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka from 1 July 2006 to 30 June, 2010 and was re-appointed for a further period of six years from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2016."
The resignation of Cabraal means that new signature varieties for Sri Lanka's notes can be expected.
Mr. Cabraal was appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka from 1 July 2006 to 30 June, 2010 and was re-appointed for a further period of six years from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2016."
The resignation of Cabraal means that new signature varieties for Sri Lanka's notes can be expected.

According to an article in The Economic Times dated 7 September 2014, the Law Ministry has ruled that Coinage Act of 2011 gives the Government of India authorization to print 1-rupee banknotes, despite the objections of the Reserve Bank of India, which prints all other denominations.
Maldives announces design competition for new note series

The door is now open for all Maldivian nationals to submit sketches/designs for the new note series. The submission deadline is 30 October 2014.

FYI, the 20th edition of the SCWPM finally has assigned Pick numbers to the notes with rupee symbols which have been issued since 2011. Unfortunately, Krause has made a mess of it. A quick check of the listings shows the latest date is 2012 when in fact 2013 and 2014 notes have been confirmed. Also, P101 is assigned to a 5-rupee note dated 2011 with rupee symbol even though such a note does not exist, and there are duplicate listings for this denomination spread across P88A and P94A.

On 22 October 2013, the Maldives Monetary Authority issued a new 100-rufiyaa note like MMA B14, but with enhanced security features, including Cornerstone watermarks, electrotype 100 watermark, and 3-mm wide red-to-green color-changing windowed security thread with demetalized 100 MMA and decoractive pattern. The new notes bear the signature of Governor Dr. Fazeel Najeeb and the date 20 Safar 1434/2 January 2013. The bank's pamphlet describing this note indicates the denomination was last printed in 2004, but the only known dates are 1995/AH1416 and 2000/AH1421.

According to a report in Afghanistan Times, the bank unveiled the new note officially on 26 March 2014 and will issue same "according to needs of the market."

According to a press release dated 22 January 2014, the Reserve Bank of India announced that all banknotes issued prior to 2005 were to be withdrawn from circulation as of 1 April 2014. However, a new press release dated 3 March 2014 indicates that RBI has extended the date of exchange to 1 January 2015.

The 500-rupee note has been confirmed dated 2014 both with the signature of the previous governor, Duvvuri Subbarao, as well as the current governor, Raghuram G. Rajan. The former is confirmed with inset letter E and the latter without inset letter.
The previous governor's signature has also been reported on a 1,000-rupee note. According to a video on Moneycontrol.com, the "error" notes were printed at Dewas printing facility and are considered legal tender.

Pakistan central bank appoints acting governor

According to a report on The News dated 31 January 2014, Finance Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar has appointed Ashraf Mahmood Wathra, Deputy Governor, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) as the Acting Governor SBP till further orders. Wathra takes over from Yaseen Anwar, who tendered his resignation as governor of the State Bank of Pakistan on 24 January.

According to a Giesecke & Devrient press release, the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan switched the printer and substrate for its 1- and 10-ngultrum notes dated 2013. These notes (RMA B16b and B18b, respectively) are now printed by G&D, not TDLR, and are printed on Hybrid, not paper, substrate.

Sri Lanka commemorative 500-rupee note confirmed

According to a press release dated 8 November 2013, on 15 November the Central Bank of Sri Lanka began issuing 5 million 500-rupee notes commemorating the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Sri Lanka from 15 to 17 November 2013. The note is like the preceding issues, but with a purple CHOGM 2013 Sri Lanka logo instead of a butterfly at the lower left front, decorative artwork flanking the electrotype watermark, new date, and serial numbers from T/51 000001- T/55 1000000.
A limited number of commemorative notes with low serial numbers packaged in a folder will be sold at a price of Rs. 800 each at the Economic History Museum, at No. 54 Chatham Street, Colombo 1, and the Central Bank Provincial Offices at Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Matale, Matara, and Trincomalee.

According to a Reuters article, "The [Indian] government has appointed Raghuram Rajan, the chief economic adviser in the finance ministry, to be the next governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three year term, a statement by the finance minister said on Tuesday.
Rajan will replace Duvvuri Subbarao, whose tenure ends on September 4 after five years.
Rajan joined the government last August, having previously been chief economist at the International Monetary Fund and a professor at the University of Chicago."

Turkey new 5-lira note issued 08.04.2013 confirmed

On 8 April 2013, Türkiye Cümhuriyet Merkez Bankası (Central Bank of Turkey) issued a new 5-lira note that is purple, because the exisiting tan note (P222) was too close in color to the brown 50-lira note (P225).
In addition to the new color of the 5-lira note, the bank also changed the Deputry Governor signatures on the following notes (all the new notes have Governor Erdem Başçı’s signature, seen above at left):

Thailand new 20-baht note confirmed

The Bank of Thailand issued a new 20-baht note on 1 April 2013. Green in color, the note measures 138 x 72 mm and features a portrait of King Rama IX in the Royal House of Chakri gown on the front, and on the back are images of the royal statue of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great seated on the Manangkhasila Asana Throne, the invention of the Thai script, the Ramkhamhaeng stele, ancient Thai script Lai Sue Thai, the grievance hearing, the Bell of King Ramkhamhaeng, and Sangkhalok Wares.
The new notes have high-technology anti-counterfeiting measures. They also have Braille so the blind can identify the value. The watermark of Thai numeral 20 is specially transparent when held against the light; the green security thread embedded into the paper will change to the color of red-purple when user tilts the new banknotes; and the use of raised features and matching element techniques on denomination numeral. The banknotes are made of better paper quality to provide the longer life cycle.

India reportedly considering 10-rupee polymer note

According to an article in DailyBhaskar.com dated 13 March 2013, the minister of state for finance, Namo Narain Meena, has announced that the Reserve Bank of India will issue one billion 10-rupee notes printed on polymer on field trial basis in five cities— Bhubhaneswar, Jaipur, Kochi, Mysore, and Shimla—with varied geographical locations and climactic conditions. The move is designed to extend the lifespan of this denomination, as well as reduce counterfeiting.
No word yet on when the new notes will be issued. The bank has made similar statements over the past four years and nothing has come of it yet.

According to an official press release dated 11 December 2012, the Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue 100-rupee (US$1.85) banknotes with inset letter L in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005, bearing the signature of Dr. D. Subbarao, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, and the year of printing 2012 printed on the reverse of the Bank note.
The design of these notes to be issued now is similar in all respects to the `100 Bank notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series- 2005, issued earlier.
All the Bank notes in the denomination of `100 issued by the Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender.

A New Book on Tibetan Paper Money

Tibetan banknotes were issued between 1912/13 and 1959. The first series of “Tam” notes was printed by hand with woodblocks on handmade paper. The multicoloured 50 Tam notes and the following issues in “Srang” were machine printed on native papers. All Tibetan notes were numbered by hand by specially trained calligraphists.
Owing to their artistic design Tibetan banknotes can be considered as part of Tibet’s cultural heritage.
This book explores the historical background which led to their issue, the way in which they were produced and the merit of their artisic design.
The first four chapters of the book are dedicated to the paper notes which were printed and released in Lhasa and include a catalogue part with estimated values of the different issues and their variants. The fifth chapter is dedicated ot semi-official notes issued by an Eastern Tibetan monastery, while the last chapter is dealing with banknotes which bear both Chinese and Tibetan inscriptions and were put into circulation by Chinese authorities in the former province of Xikang which comprised parts of Eastern Tibet and Western Sichuan. Ten apendices provide further information for the specialist and an extensive bibliography concludes the book.
The book is profusely illustrated; all types of the banknotes and many variants and trial prints are reproduced in colour.
With this comprehensive study of Tibetan paper money the author has in mind both the more academically inclined reader who wants to be thouroughly informed about one fascinating aspect of Tibet’s cultural history of the 20th century and the collector of Tibetan banknotes who wishes to identify the pieces in his collection and find out their approximate market value.

According to an article on Ceylon Today dated 14 September 2012, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka will include Tamil text on banknotes to be issued in the future, in keeping with the country’s language policy. The new notes will include the words "this currency note issued on behalf the Government of Sri Lanka is valid for any financial transaction within Sri Lanka" in the Tamil language. Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal has agreed to provide equal prominence to all three languages (English, Sinhala, and Tamil) when issuing banknotes in future.

According to a press release dated 19 July 2012, the Reserve Bank of India will soon issue 10- and 50-rupee notes dated 2012 with the rupee symbol and inset letter L. All denominations have already been confirmed with the rupee symbol added; it's just the L insert that is new to these two denominations.

India to test 10-rupee polymer notes

According to an article in The Asian Age dated 21 July 2012, the government will conduct a field trial with one billion polymer 10-rupee banknotes to check the possibility of introducing polymer notes in India. The trials will be conducted in five cities—Mysore, Kochi, Shimla, Jaipur and Bhubaneshwar—selected on the basis of their varied geographical location and climatic conditions.
The tests are to be conducted to determine if polymer notes last longer, thereby reducing replacement and disposal costs.
In another effort to increase the lifespan of banknotes, banks are asked to do away with the practices of stapling fresh note packets and writing on the watermark areas.

On 7 March 2011, Bangladesh Bank withdrew its new 50-taka (BB B51 / PNL) note after a spelling mistake of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin was identified on the back of the note. On 15 July 2012, the bank issued a corrected note identical to the withdrawn note, except for the date (2012 vs. 2011) and the caption on the back.

According to an article in Outlook India dated 31 March 2012, within a year or two the Reserve Bank of India intends to issue new banknotes portraying the growth and development story of the country, says Bimal Julka, Director General, Directorate of Currency.
"It has been decided to add new features to currency notes. When anyone will look at a 500- or 1,000-rupee (US$9.70 and $19.40, respectively) note, it should also reflect India's growth and development.” The new notes will also have enhanced security features..

According to an article in The Daily Star dated 27 February 2012, Bangladesh Bank planned to introduce new banknotes denominated in 10, 20, and 50 taka on 7 March. The notes bear the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a photograph of the National Mausoleumon on the front, and be signed by Governor Atiur Rahman.

Bangladesh new 50-taka note withdrawn due to error

According to an article in Banglanews24 dated 7 March 2012, Bangladesh Bank has withdrawn the new 50-taka (US$0.60) note after a spelling mistake of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin was identified on the back of the note. The note had just been introduced earlier in the day on 7 March, so it's likely that very few made it into circulation, even though 2.25 crore pieces were printed. Confirming the matter, Director-General of BB Governor Secretariat AFM Asaduzzaman said, “These notes will not be circulated in the market before rectifying," giving the impression that the bank may overprint the error notes with corrected text rather than destroy them.

Bangladesh new 60-taka commemorative note confirmed

According to a press release in Bangla, Bangladesh Bank is scheduled to issue a new 60-taka (US$0.70) note on 15 Febuary 2012. The note measures 130 x 60 mm. It commemorates 60 Years of Language Movement 1952-2012, and will be available as a numismatic product packaged in a folder for 200 taka, as well as a circulating note at face value.

There are at least five varieties of the 100-taka (US$1.45) note dated 2009:
1. Signature Ahmed, Jamuna bridge, Bangla serial numbers.
2. Signature Rahman (1st sig variety), Jamuna bridge, Bangla serial numbers.
3. Signature Rahman (2nd sig variety), Bangabandhu bridge, Bangla serial numbers.
4. Signature Rahman (2nd sig variety), Bangabandhu bridge, Western serial numbers at lower right.
5. Signature Rahman (1st sig variety), Jamuna bridge, Western serial numbers at lower right.
The fifth variety is the new discovery, and it is odd because the signature reverted back to Rahman’s original signature variety, and the name of the bridge on the back reverted to the old name of Jamuna, but the Western serial numbers at lower right place the order of printing after the fourth variety, and before the first variety dated 2010, which has Rahman’s 2nd signature variety and the new Bangabandhu bridge name.
Apparently Security Printing Corporation must have discovered unused stocks of the second 2009 variety notes and decided to apply the new Western serial numbers and issue these notes into circulation.

Bangladesh new 40-taka commemorative confirmed

According to a press release dated 21 December 2011, Bank Bangladesh introduced a new 40-taka (US$0.50) note to commemorate the “40th Victory Anniversary of Bangladesh,” featuring “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman” and the National Martyr’s Monument in Savar on front, and six armed men on back.
Curiously, this note has an electrotype 10 in the watermark, indicating it was likely printed on extra 10-taka banknote paper. However, Bank Bangladesh has not yet issued a new 10-taka note with the same watermark.
A total of 20,000 notes were printed, of which 5,000 were packaged as numismatic products in a folder, some of which had an error in the spelling of the country’s name on front (see above).

According to a press release dated 23 September 2011, the Reserve Bank of India has issued (on 3 October 2011) a 10-rupee (US$0.20) note without inset letter, in the Mahatma Gandhi series, bearing the signature of Governor Subbarao, dated 2011, and incorporating the new symbol for the rupee currency.
This denomination has also been confirmed with R inset letter.

All Pakistani denominations 10 to 1,000 rupees have been confirmed dated 2010 with two different signature varieties: Syed Salim Raza and Shahid Hafiz Kardar. Furthermore, all denominations have been confirmed dated 2011 with the signature of Shahid Hafiz Kardar. The latest date confirmed for the 5,000-rupee note is 2009.

The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan has issued a 100-ngultrum (US$2.05) banknote to commemorate the 13 October 2011 royal wedding of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema. According to this BBS article dated 12 October 2011, the notes (and 500-ngultrum coins) are available in Bank of Bhutan, Bhutan Development Bank Limited, and in the BOB counter at the Paro Airport from 13 October until 4 November at a cost of 500 ngultrum and 5,000 ngultrum, respectively.

According to a press release dated 9 August 2011, Bangladesh Bank will issue on 11 August a new set of notes denominated in 5, 100, 500, and 1,000 taka, all dated 2011 and featuring a portrait and watermark of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with the National Martyr’s Monument in Savar at center front. The new 2-taka note issued by the state bears the signature of Finance Secretary Dr Mohammad Tareq while the other denominations have the signature of Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman.

According to an article on MoneyControl dated 26 August 2011, the Reserve Bank of India will introduce 100 crore (1 billion) polymer 10-rupee (US$0.20) banknotes on a trial basis. India has been contemplating such a test for several years now. No word yet on exactly when the polymer notes will be issued.

Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Rochadi dies in New York

On 10 July 2011, Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Budi Rochadi died at age 60 of unspecified causes in New York, where he was attending a conference on banknotes. Rochadi had served as deputy governor in charge of settlement systems since January 2007. Rochadi’s signature appears on the 2,000-rupiah notes dated 2009, 2010, and 2011.

According to a Financial Chronicle article dated 23 May 2011, the Reserve Bank of India will soon issue new banknotes of all denominations with enhanced security features and the new currency symbol for the rupee. Although the date of intro of the notes hasn’t been revealed, newly designed coins with the new symbol are expected in July.

According to a BCC report, Nepal Rastra Bank is withdrawing all banknotes bearing the portrait of the former king, Gyanendra, as of 15 March 2011, though they can still be exchanged for new notes depicting Mount Everest at bank branches for several more weeks.

Sri Lanka unveils new notes to be issued soon

According to a booklet produced by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to highlight events planned to celebrate its 60th anniversary, a new series of banknotes was scheduled to be issued 3 March 2011. However, according to a more recent AsianTribute article, the notes are expected “next month,” and indications are they may be issued as early as 4 February.
The denomination structure of the new series will be 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 rupees (for a total face value of approximately US$60). The note series was designed by two Sri Lankan artists selected from an island-wide competition. The themes of the new notes are Development and Prosperity, and Sri Lankan Dancers. The fronts of the new notes bear artistict impressions of selected development projects in Sri Lanka and native birds and butterflies. The backs depict Sri Lankan traditional dancers and guard stones in a background of a map of Sri Lanka.
Like the current series of notes, the new notes have vertically-oriented backs. They appear to be printed by DLR, are dated 2010-01-01, and signed by Mahinda Rajapaksa and Ajith Nivard Cabraal.

The 5-rupee note will have an R inset letter whereas the 10-rupee note will have an N insert letter. Both will bear the signature of Dr. D. Subbarao, governor. The design of these notes is similar in all respects to the banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series with additional / new security features. Existing notes will circulate in parallel.

In an e-Biz Sri Lanka article dated 7 September 2010, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka is said to be considering issuing a 5,000-rupee (US$44.50) banknote to commemorate the bank’s 60th anniversary, as well as other denominations from 20 to 1,000 rupees depicting scenes of “Development and Prosperity” and “Sri Lankan Dancers.” The new notes are expected in 2011.

India approves new symbol for rupee

On 15 July 2010, India’s Union Cabinet approved a symbol for the rupee which is a combination of the Roman “R” without the vertical stroke and the Devnagri letter “ra.” The symbol was designed by Bombay IIT postgraduate D Udaya Kumar. A finance ministry official said the government is not planning to print banknotes with the new symbol. Historians say that the first “rupee” was issued by Emperor Sher Shah Suri in the 15th century. One rupee was equivalent to 40 copper paisas then. The rupee is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word raupya, which means silver.

Sri Lanka new 1,000-rupee commemorative confirmed

According to a press release, on 17.11.2009 the Central Bank of Sri Lanka introduced a new 1,000-rupee (US$8.75) commemorative banknote to mark the ushering of peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka.
In terms of section 52 A (1) (a) and ( b) of the Monetary Law Act (Amendment) No.6 of 1998, with the approval of the Hon. Minister of Finance, the Central Bank issues commemorative coins and notes. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued the first commemorative note to mark the 50th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka in 1998 and this is the second commemorative note that is being issued.
The theme on the obverse of the note is one country and one nation in harmony, progressing towards prosperity under the leadership of His Excellency President, Mahinda Rajapaksa. The obverse depicts the image of His Excellency President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, which is to the right of the note. A map of Sri Lanka with the rising sun in the background and a “Punkalasa” with ears of paddy at center left depicts territorial integrity and prosperity respectively, that are results of national harmony and peace.
The valiant contribution made by the nation’s victorious sons and daughters of the security forces and the police is the theme on the reverse of the note. The design at the center depicts the hoisting of the national flag by members of the security forces. Images of the Mavil Aru annicut and Thoppigala rock (Baron’s Cap) that were turning points of humanitarian operations of the security forces appear in the background.
The size of the note is 157 mm x 78.5 mm and the predominant colour is blue. The notes are identified by a serial prefix of Q and the numbers of the notes are starting from Q/1 000001 onwards and appear on the obverse in Arabic numerals, horizontally on the left and vertically on the right of the note.
The note contains several current security features. The watermark depicting the heraldic lion of Sri Lanka, with the sword highlighted in a panel clear of printing and Cornerstones as hitherto used in current Sri Lanka Rs 1000 note, 1.2 mm wide windowed clear text security thread, see-through feature in exact registration and invisible fluorescent printing have been incorporated in the note.
The note carries the signatures in facsimile of His Excellency the President and Minister of Finance, Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Mr Ajith Nivard Cabraal, with the date 2009-05-20.
The note was issued to His Excellency President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, by the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr Ajith Nivard Cabraal on 17th November 2009 at the John Exter International Conference Hall of the Central Bank in Colombo. A limited number of notes with the first serial numbers in an attractive folder will be issued at a price of Rs. 1,500 each.
The note will be legal tender in Sri Lanka for the payment of any amount and will be a liability of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka whilst in circulation.

At a press-conference held on Mizan 13, 1388 (2009) the Central Bank Governor, His Excellency Abdul Qadeer Fitrat, announced that a new family of banknotes would soon be released to the public.
The bank notes are machine readable, of better quality and have more advanced security features than current banknotes. The security features provide robust protection against counterfeiting.
As a result of the improved quality of the banknotes Governor Fitrat reported that the new banknotes will have a greater longevity (4 years) than existing banknotes (3 years).
The Central bank will gradually replace the existing 85 billion Afs that have been issued to date with the new and improved notes. Old, mutilated and dirty notes will be gradually removed from circulation and destroyed in the Central Banks furnace.
The introduction of new banknotes is standard procedure for central banks around the world. Previously, Afghanistan had three separate currencies which lead to hyper-inflation and macroeconomic instability. The currency reform of 1381 introduced a single currency which is issued exclusively by the central Bank. As a result of these reforms the Afghani currency is one of the most stable currencies in the region.

According to an article in The Economic Times dated 08.12.09, the Reserve Bank of India is replacing 1- and 2-rupee banknotes with coins due to the short life span and high costs of printing small-denomination notes. In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena said, "The notes of these denominations have been coinised…The Reserve Bank has informed that in view of the short life span of the lower denominations notes of Re 1, Rs 2, and Rs 5 and the high cost involved in printing and processing of soiled notes of these denominations, the government has decided to discontinue the printing of lower denominations notes," Meena said.

According to an All Headline News article dated 19 November 2009, Bangladesh Bank plans to use a portrait of founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mijubur Rahman on all new currency. There are now at least three 100-taka note varieties dated 2009. One is signed by Governor Salehuddin Ahmed, and the other two are signed by Governor Atiur Rahman, but the signatures are slightly different (see below).
In addition to the signature change, the text on the back of the note has changed slightly, too. The text on the first note reads Bangabandhu Bridge (named after Sheikh Mujibar Rahman whose official title was Bangabandhu), and the new one reads Jamuna Bridge (named after the river it spans).

According to a 17 September 2009 press release, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon issue a 500-rupee (US$10.40) note with E inset letter and signature of D. Subbarao, governor.
Except for the change in the inset letter, the design of these notes to be issued now is similar in all respects to the banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi Series - 2005, with additional/ new security features issued on 21 October 2005.

Bangladesh 20-taka error confirmed

While editing the Bangladesh chapter of my new catalog of world notes, Bill Stubkjaer and I confirmed that his example of the Bangladesh 20-taka note of 1979 (Pick 22) has an error in the printed solid security thread. Specifically, the words BANGLADESH BANK are repeated on the thread, but the Bs are backwords and BANK is spelled with an X, not a K:
I'd appreciate it if collectors would examine their own examples of this note and report if varieties exist with the correct spelling. Please post comments with your findings either way.

According to a Business Standard article dated 3 June 2009, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is considering a pilot project to introduce polymer notes in an effort to increase the longevity of its banknotes, said H R Khan, executive director, RBI. Anil R. Bohora and Gylfi K. Snorrason have just published a new catalog called Banknotes of Bhutan (ISBN 978-81-7525-881-5). This 137-page softcover book is beautifully illustrated in full color throughout, with large front and back images of all notes, and details of vignettes that are thoroughly explained. The book contains everything there is to know about the kings, monuments, and auspicious symbols that appear on Bhutanese notes, as well as the signatories, watermarks, and printers.
I highly recommend Banknotes of Bhutan to anyone interested in this Asian country’s numismatic history. The book costs US$25 + $6 S&H and can be purchased by emailing enterandbuy@yahoo.com.

On 21 September 2006, Bangladesh Bank issued a smaller version of the 10-taka note (123 x 60 mm versus 130 x 60 mm). This smaller note has been issued dated 2006, 2007, and 2008, all with the signature of Governor Salehuddin Ahmed.

Whereas the previous three small-size 10-taka notes have the national emblem and text intaglio printed, the new note is entirely offset printed, as was the case for this denomination before September 2006. The easiest way to distinguish between the two 2008-dated notes is to compare the text on the front. The earlier note has brown text directly on the underprinting (see top set of scans below) whereas the newer note has the text surrounded by a white background (see bottom set of scans below). The backs appear to be identical.

As previously reported, on 27 January 2007, the Bangladesh Bank issued a 2-taka note (US$0.03) dated 2007. This note is like Pick 6C, but has the new date on back, a new signature (Siddique ur Rehman Chaudhry, Finance Secretary), and a windowed security thread on back (see first image below).
However, a new variety also dated 2007 has been reported, but this one appears to be printed on the same paper previously used on this denomination through the year 2004. This note contains a solid embedded security thread, not a windowed thread (see second image below). Please note that the differences in the colors of these images is most likely a result of the notes being scanned with different computer equipment and is not a reflection of a change in the color schemes of the notes themselves.
A new 2008 dated note has also been reported with the signature of Mohammed Tarek, and it too uses a solid security thread (see bottom set of images below).

Turkey issues new notes on 01.01.2009

The name of Turkey’s currency has reverted from “new Turkish lira” (TRY) to “Turkish lira” (TRL) as of 1 January 2009, necessitating the issuance of new banknotes and coins. Turkey last changed the currency by removing six zeroes on 1 January 2005, at a cost of US$300 million. This new move is expected to incur similar costs. Durmuş Yılmaz, governor of the Turkish Central Bank, indicated that a new denomination, the TRL200, would begin circulation as well. The new notes have different sizes as a measure against forgery and to facilitate their use by blind people. The depiction of the country’s founder, Kemal Atatürk, stays on the front of all banknotes; the new designs were unveiled 3 October 2008.
All of the notes have dots in the upper left to assist the visually impaired, microtext, a solid security thread, a holographic stripe, registration device, Omron rings, a latent image, Atatürk as watermark with electrotype denomination, and an iridescent stripe on back. The notes are printed by the Central Bank Banknote Printing House in Ankara.
While each banknote has a portrait of Ataturk, the founder of the modern Republic of Turkey, on one side, there are portraits of other prominent Turks on the other sides of the banknotes as listed below:

Cahit Arf (1910-1997) was a Turkish mathematician. He is known for the Arf invariant of a quadratic form in characteristic 2 (applied in knot theory and surgery theory) in topology, the Hasse-Arf theorem in ramification theory, and Arf rings.
Architect Kemaleddin (1870-1927) was a prominent Turkish architect. He is a graudate of civil engineering and studied extensively in Germany. He repaired many mosques. He was chosen as a member to the British Royal Architects Institute. He constructed the Bostanci, Bebek, Yesilkoy and Kutlutepe mosques.
Ms. Fatma Aliye (1862-1939) was the first female novelist in Turkish literature and Islamic geography. She was the daughter of last grand Ottoman histrorian Ahmad Cavdat Pasha.
Itri (1630 or 1640-1712) is a well known and important Turkish composer.
Yunus Emre (1238?-1320?) was a Turkish poet and Sufi mystic. He has exercised immense influence on Turkish literature, from his own day until the present.

With the issuance of the note below, the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) continues to remove King Gyanendra’s name, image, and royal symbols from the country’s currency. Like the new Rs500 issued September 27, 2007, the new Rs1,000 still has the king’s portrait as watermark because the paper was ordered from an Indonesian manufacturer before April 2006 when the monarchy fell out of favor. The new Rs1,000 had an initial print run of 30 million notes, with prefixes from KHA-21 to KHA-50 (replacement prefixes are KHA-51, -52, and -53).

Pakistan issues revised 20-rupee note (B233a)

Responding to the public outcry over the similar colors of the 20-rupee note (B232a) issued on 13 August 2005, and the 5,000-rupee note (B239a) issued on 27 May 2006, the State Bank of Pakistan today issued a revised Rs20 note which is identical to the previous issue, except the colors have been revised to facilitate distinguishing it from all other denominations in the new series. The previous brown Rs20 remains legal tender.

India’s demand for high-denomination notes increases

India’s booming economy has pushed up demand for 500- and 1,000-rupee notes by approximately 20 and 50 percent, respectively, with the volume of almost all other denominations remaining steady. The cost of printing currency has more than doubled to Rs20 trillion during 2006-07, with the business split between Security Printing and Monitoring Corporation of India and Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran.

In addition to the Rs500 (which has an initial print run of 20 million notes), the NRB is preparing to issue new 50- and 100-rupee denominations in mid-2008 that also remove King Gyanendra’s name, image, and royal symbols. The new Rs500 still has the king’s portrait as watermark because the paper was ordered from an Indonesian manufacturer before April 2006 when the monarchy fell out of favor. Because the impoverished Himalayan country could not afford new paper, bank officials chose instead to obscure the king’s image by printing a rhododendron over the watermark.

Pakistan’s new 1,000-rupee note (B238a) creates controversy

On 8 August 2007, Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain asked a National Assembly standing committee to probe and report within a month on why the new 1,000-rupee note (B238a) carries an imprint of the national flag in lilac (like the Turkish flag) rather than green, and why packs of note are now bound with a paper band and not stapled as was the past norm.
The State Bank of Pakistan explained that the Pakistani flag does not appear on any SBP notes (the flag has a white band to the left of the field of green); the crescent and five-pointed star is merely a security feature printed with optical variable ink (OVI) that changes color from magenta to green when the note is tilted. Furthermore, the SBP pointed out that bundling notes is the international standard and the practice of stapling notes has been halted in an effort to increase the longevity of the nation’s notes.

Bhutan issues new 10- and 100-ngultrum notes dated 2006

On November 20, 2006, The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan released the first of its new “Series 2006” of redesigned notes. These two new denominations add to the series.
The notes are printed by De La Rue in the UK on cotton paper. There is intaglio microlettering in the line running horizontally parallel to the name of the issuing authority on the front of the note in Dzongkha and in English on the back.
The new series also has high relief marks to help blind people feel and recognize different denominations, and they feature a double coating of varnish to improve durability and prevent soiling and counterfeiting.

Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet has asked the State Bank of Pakistan to prepare a new 5-rupee note (US$0.08) for introduction to replace the old Rs5 (B229) that was withdrawn from circulation on 1 July 2005.

On 10 January 2007, the subcommittee of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee directed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to change the colors and designs of the new family of banknotes, especially the Rs20 and Rs5,000 denominations.
“The identical colours, designs, and sizes [sic] of new currency notes, especially those of Rs20 and Rs5,000 denominations, are very deceptive and are creating problems for the people. The SBP should consider changing the colours and designs of these notes,” said Riaz Fatiana, chairman of the subcommittee.
SBP’s roll out of the new family of notes began in August 2005 with the Rs20 and is expected to be completed in 2007 with the introduction of the Rs50 and Rs1,000. The new family of notes all feature the portrait of Quaid-e-Azam in Sherwani on the front, with different structures on the back. All of the notes are 65 mm tall, but their length graduates by 8 mm per denomination, from 115 mm for the Rs10 up to 163 mm for the Rs5,000.

The Governor, State Bank of Pakistan, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar launched Rs. 100 and Rs. 500 new design bank notes at a ceremony held today at SBP Head Office, Karachi. The launch of these notes is part of a campaign to eliminate counterfeiting of notes in the country.
The State Bank has taken advantage of the latest technology to make these notes virtually impossible to be forged by incorporating the state-of-the-art security features that are easy to recognize but almost impossible to counterfeit.
Some of the special security features added in the new design banknotes are anti-copy and anti-scan, microlettering, a latent image of the denomination which can be seen when the note is tilted, a windowed security thread that changes colors when seen against the light, and a registration device.
The launch of these high-tech notes is also expected to revolutionize the banking business in Pakistan as these notes are equipped with machine-readable features. This will facilitate automation of handling of notes by banks and use of equipment to detect counterfeiting while processing the notes. Due to presence of special features in these notes, ATMs that can receive as well as dispense cash can now be introduced in Pakistan.
The old design Rs.100 (B226) and Rs.500 (B227) will remain in circulation as legal tender along with the new design notes.
With this launch, the State Bank has already introduced new design notes of Rs. 10, 20, 100, 500, and 5,000 denominations. The State Bank plans to complete its current design upgrading campaign of notes when new designs of the remaining denominations of Rs. 50 and Rs. 1,000 are introduced early in 2007.

The 5-taka note was discontinued some years ago and has now been re-introduced, reportedly as a temporary emergency issue printed on 100-taka paper due to lack of coinage.

Pick 47: 10 taka, 2006. New date. Issued 21.09.2006. Like Pick 39, but reduced size (123 x 60 mm versus 130 x 60 mm), new signature (Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Governor), and signature in blue instead of red.

Serial number prefix: KHA/ 97 to GA/17 (20 million pieces). Registration device. Windowed security thread. King Gyanendra dressed in Daura Suruwal (national dress) as portrait and wmk, Nepal Rastra Bank building at left, Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) at center, Ashok Stambha (Lumbini) at right. Pair of danphe (national bird) and Mt. Amadablam at center, NRB logo at top left, arms at right on back.

Signature: Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Governor. Bengal tiger and bank symbol of as wmk. Banganabdhu Multipurpose bridge on back. 140 x 62 mm.
