According to a press release dated 29 November 2018, on 1 December the National Bank of Romania introduced a 100-leu polymer note commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Great Union. The front depicts King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria, and the Great National Assembly in Alba Iulia, on 1 December 1918. The back depicts the arrival of the royal cortege in Bucharest, on 1 December 1918, and part of the mace of King Ferdinand I, together with four women in folk costumes typical of each united Romanian province: Bessarabia, Romania, Transylvania and Bukovina. 10,000 notes will be sold with leaflet for 150 lei each.

According to a press release dated 5 September 2018, the Czech National Bank has introduced new 100- and 200-korun notes like the preceding issues, but they have enhanced anti-counterfeiting protection: addition of Omron rings; a 3-mm wide, puce-to-green windowed security thread with different demetalized text; electrotype element added to watermark; plus green and orange fluorescent ink.

According to contributor Kevin Klauss in Prague, the new notes are not widely released for circulation as there are some problems with automats recognizing these notes. While you can get 100-korun notes at the central bank, the tellers are instructed to give one piece per customer per day. The 200-korun note is not currently available at the National Bank in Prague.

According to an article in The National dated 28 October 2018 and a bank press release, the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates intends to introduce a new 100-dirham note with improved anti-counterfeiting features on 30 October 2018, including a new green-to-blue SPARK Live feature at lower left front and a green-to-blue windowed Galaxy security thread. Furthermore, the denomination has been removed from lower right front, as has the silver foil stamp from upper right front. The notes are printed at the UAE’s first banknote printing plant in the Khalifa Industrial Zone in Abu Dhabi.

In October 2018, the Central Bank of Iraq introduced the first three denominations in a new series of banknote designs aimed at modernizing the currency and better reflecting the nation’s heritage and diversity. As part of the redesign, the new banknotes will now feature the governor of the central bank’s printed name instead of his signature.

According to a press release dated 24 October 2018, the Royal Bank of Scotland has unveiled the design of its first 20-pound polymer note which features the historic Scottish entrepreneur Kate Cranston on front, and features red squirrels and blaeberry fruit on back. It also includes extracts from 16th century Scottish poet Mark Alexander Boyd’s work, Cupid and Venus. The 20-pound note printed by De La Rue on Safeguard substrate is the third denomination in the “Fabric of Nature” series, and is planned for introduction in 2020.

According to an article in Azernews dated 25 September 2018, the Central Bank of the Republic of Uzbekistan has denied rumors that it intends to issue a 100,000-som banknote. At present the largest denomination in circulation is the 50,000-som note (B215) introduced in 2017.

According to a press release dated 20 September 2018, the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus announced modifications to banknotes to be introduced in 2019 and 2020. They will retain the basic design, color, and size of existing issues, but the 50-ruble note will have its denomination spelled in accordance to modern Belarusian spelling rules, and all notes will have captions added to identify architectural features and dates reflecting their introduction (2019 for 5 and 10 rubles; 2020 for 20 and 50 rubles).

On 3 May 2017, a resolution authorized the Banco Central del Uruguay to introduce up to 10 million new 50-peso uruguayo polymer notes to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bank. When these notes were introduced on 14 September 2018, the bank indicated that it intends to use polymer substrate for other lower denominations in the future, with the physical size of the notes increasing according to their denominations.

On 17 September 2018, the European Central Bank unveiled the new 100- and 200-euro notes scheduled to be introduced on 28 May 2019, thereby completing the Europa series. The new notes feature a satellite hologram and an enhanced OVI “emerald number” with € symbols at lower left front. They are also a different size than the preceding issues.

According to a press release dated 27 August 2018, the 500-peso note is the first denomination in a new family of banknotes with improved security features and designs representing Mexico’s historical and natural heritage. The fronts depict Old Mexico, Colonial Mexico, Independent Mexico, Reformation and Restoration of the Republic, Revolutionary Mexico, and Contemporary Mexico. The backs depict elements of fauna and flora identified with each of Mexico’s ecosystems, including rivers and lakes, temperate forests, dry forests, thickets and deserts, coasts, seas and islands, and rainforests, through recognized sites in the World Heritage list of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO).

According to a press release dated 10 September 2018, "Apropos the rumors circulating on social media regarding discontinuation of Rs.5000 banknote, SBP categorically rejects all such rumors and requests the general public to pay no heed to such disinformation.
It is further clarified that SBP Act, 1956 clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of different institutions including SBP for issuance, circulation and demonetization or cancellation of banknotes. Specifically, section 25 of the Act requires a recommendation of SBP Board of Directors before the Federal Government makes any decision about the demonetization or cancellation of banknotes. The SBP Board has not submitted any recommendation for demonetization or discontinuation of Rs.5000 or any other banknote to Federal Government or Cabinet. Further, in case of demonetization of any bank note, SBP announces the same well in advance and provides ample time to public to change the currency under demonetization process. SBP places all such announcements on its website and circulates the same through its social media platforms as well. The public is therefore advised not to pay heed to any such rumors which are aimed at creating unnecessary hype and anxiety. They may also verify announcements from SBP Website (www.sbp.org.pk), Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/StateBankPakistan) and Twitter account before forwarding the same to their contacts."

On 5 September 2018, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank announced plans to introduce a new family of notes beginning in mid-2019. The new family will retain the same denominations and color schemes as preceding issues, but with vertical orientation and new designs on polymer substrate for improved durability and security. They will feature holographic windows and embossed tactile geometric shapes to allow the visually impaired to distinguish between denominations.

According to a press release dated 15 August 2018, the Swiss National Bank will begin issuing a new 200-franc note on 22 August 2018. Existing notes of the same denomination will continue to circulate in parallel. The new brown 200-franc note focuses on Switzerland’s scientific expertise, as expressed by matter, the note’s key motif.


Confirmed with signatures 80 (Jean Studer and Thomas Jordan), 82 (Jean Studer and Fritz Zurbrügg).

The next denomination, the 1,000-franc note, will be presented on 5 March 2019 and enter circulation on 13 March 2019. The last denomination in the new series, the 100-franc note, is to be issued in autumn 2019.

On 20 August 2018, Venezuela began the process of demonetizing all preceding bolívar issues and replacing them at a rate of 100,000:1 (effectively removing five zeroes) with a new currency called the bolívar soberano (Spanish: sovereign bolivar, Bs.S.). The new notes come in eight denominations from 2 to 500 bolívars, without the adjective soberano.

According to a 13 June 2018 press release, on 18 July 2018 the South African Reserve Bank plans to introduce new banknotes to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela, known as Madiba. The commemorative notes have the same front as the existing issues, but with a young Madiba on back. They will circulate in parallel with the exiting issues.

On 25 July 2018, Venezuela's president, Nicolás Maduro, announced that the currency reform that was initially planned to begin in June, and that was later postponed until 4 August, was postponed once again, this time until 20 August. During the speech, the president also stated that the conversion rate was shifted from 1:1000 to 1:100.000, which means that one bolívar soberano will be equal to one hundred thousand bolívares fuertes. Also, actual notes were shown for the first time (until now, only computerized designs have been revealed). The new coins were shown for the first time, too. Among other things, he announced that the new currency will be pegged to the petro, a Venezuelan, state-owned cryptocurrency. He also suggested the possibility that a 5-bolívares coin could also be issued.

According to a press release dated 31 July 2018, the Bank of Zambia plans to upgrade the security features of its banknotes. Specifically, the 20-, 50-, and 100-kwacha notes will have a SPARK Live feature added at lower right front and a 5-mm wide windowed security thread. The 10-kwacha note has a new windowed security thread, and the 2- and 5-kwacha notes have different images in glossy varnish with blind embossing. All denominations have tactile marks for the visually impaired. The two smallest denominations are expected to be introduced in August 2018, with the remaining denominations issued in a phased manner, and existing notes continuing to circulate in parallel.

According to a Hong Kong Monetary Authority press release dated 24 July 2018, the Standard Chartered Bank, Bank of China, and Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation have unveiled the designs of a new 2018 series of banknotes.

"Consistent with the current series, the new series will consist of five denominations, each adopting the same colour scheme. It is the first time that the thematic subjects on the reverse side of the NIBs’ new series banknotes are standardised for each denomination to facilitate easy recognition by the public. The selected thematic subjects represent different aspects of Hong Kong as an international metropolis, featuring its rhythm of life, recreation and entertainment, as well as its rich natural and cultural heritage. The five denominations depict respectively the position of Hong Kong as international financial centre (HK$1,000), the spectacular Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark (HK$500), Cantonese opera as our art and cultural legacy (HK$100), butterflies that inhabit Hong Kong (HK$50), and the popular dim sum and tea culture (HK$20). For aesthetic presentation of the subject and easy distinction from previous series, the reverse side of the banknote is in vertical orientation instead of the traditional horizontal layout.
The designs of all five denominations were unveiled today. The HK$1,000 and HK$500 notes will be put into circulation in the last quarter of 2018 and early 2019 respectively, and the lower denominations of HK$100, HK$50 and HK$20 will be ready for issue in batches between 2019 and 2020."

According to a Central Bank of the Solomon Islands press release dated 5 July 2018 as well as a De La Rue press release of the same date, on 7 July 2018, the Central Bank of Solomon Islands introduced a new legal tender 40-dollar polymer banknote and 2-dollar colored coin to commemorate the 40th anniversary of independence. 100,000 notes were printed by De La Rue, and the coins were minted by the Royal Australian Mint. The theme of the note is a celebration of independence with the phrase “A call to the nation to come together as one and move forward.”

According to a press release dated 23 May 2018, the Central Bank of Azerbaijan introduced a new denomination, the 200-manat note designed by Crane Currency in the US and printed by Giesecke & Devrient in Germany. The motif of the notes is "the ‘Heydar Aliyev Center’ constructed to the memory of the architect of independent Azerbaijan, the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. The new banknote features the majestic image of the Heydar Aliyev Center, one of the most contemporary symbols of our capital, the main exterior and interior design elements, elements of national carpet samples, and other national ornaments."

On 23 May 2018, Ulster Bank unveiled the designs of two new banknotes to be introduced in 2019 under the “Living in Nature” theme. Both notes have vertical designs and are printed on polymer substrate. The blue 5-pound note focuses on Northern Ireland as a place that people pass through and visit, highlighting the importance of the sea and migration. It depicts Strangford Lough in County Down and Brent Geese. The brown 10-pound note focuses on Northern Ireland as a place of growth, both in terms of agriculture and heritage. It depicts Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, the Irish hare and Guelder-rose shrubs. The notes also feature culinary delights associated with the north, namely a king scallop and an Ulster Glade potato.

The Česká Národní Banka held a competition to design a new 100-korun banknote featuring Alois Rasin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Czechoslovak currency. On 1 March 2018, the bank announced its decision to approve the following design submitted by painter Eva Hašková. The new note will circulate in parallel with the normal issues beginning in 2019.

On 22 March 2018, Venezuela announced that it would demonetize all preceding bolívar issues and replace them at a rate of 1,000:1 (effectively removing three zeroes) with a new currency called the bolívar soberano (sovereign bolivar), from 4 June to 4 July 2018. The new notes will come in eight denominations from 2 to 500 bolívars, without the adjective “soberano.”

On 14 March 2018, the National Bank of Ukraine announced that it will stop printing and issuing banknotes of 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryven, and will gradually replace worn notes with coins of the same denominations.

According to a press release dated 8 March 2018, the Bank of Thailand plans to introduce the 17th series of notes. The fronts feature the new king, Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, and the backs features two kings in order of reign, along with images of memorable royal duties. The three lower denominations will be introduced 6 April 2018, followed by the two larger denominations on 28 July 2018.

On 8 March 2018, International Women’s Day, the Bank of Canada unveiled the design of a new 10-dollar polymer note featuring Viola Desmond, a successful black Nova Scotian businesswoman who challenged racial segregation in 1946. The note is the first regular issue Canadian note to feature an iconic woman, and the first vertically oriented design.
With the issuance of this new 10-dollar note, the Bank of Canada’s approach to issuing bank notes is changing. Rather than issuing all five denominations within a short time frame, a new note will be issued every few years, allowing the integration of the latest security features each time a new note is issued. The next 5-dollar note will also feature a new iconic portrait subject and supporting imagery. Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, and first francophone Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, will be honored on higher value banknotes when they are redesigned. These changes mean that former prime ministers William Lyon Mackenzie King and Sir Robert Borden will no longer be portrayed on banknotes. The 20-dollar denomination will continue to feature the reigning monarch.

According to a 21 February 2018 press release, "Danmarks Nationalbank has chosen the French company Oberthur Fiduciaire SAS as its supplier of Danish banknotes from 2018. The contract has been signed as a four-year framework agreement, with the option that it may be extended for a further two years. According to a 14 February 2018 article on Awoko, the Bank of Sierra Leone announced plans to introduce redesigned banknotes in 2021 to celebrate the country's 60th anniversary of independence. The new notes will depict past presidents, including Ahmad Tejan Kabbah on the 5,000-leone note and Ernest Bai Koroma on the 10,000-leone note. No word on whether the bank will continue to produce 1,000- and 2,000-leone denominations, with face values of only US$0.15 and US$0.25, respectively.

On 1 December 2017, Spink concluded an auction of new Bank of Scotland 10-pound notes to raise money for the charity Mental Health UK. There were two notes with special 8-character serial numbers chosen by the winning bidders, plus 36 other notes with prefixes and serial numbers designed to appeal to railroad enthusiasts. 18 notes each with BR (British Railway) and LMS (London Midland Scotland) prefixes were sold with serial numbers corresponding to the number on each of the Stanier Black 5 locomotives in preservation today. The LMS notes also feature an overprinted “totem” sign at upper left back corresponding to a station: Ardlui, Arrochar And Tarbet, Banavie, Bridge Of Orchy, Corrour, Crianlarich Upper, Fort William, Garelochhead, Glenfinnan, Helensburgh-Upper, Lochailort, Locheilside, Morar, Rannoch, Roy Bridge, Spean Bridge, Tulloch, and Tyndrum Upper.

According to a 14 December 2017 press release, Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing commemorative banknotes in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement.





The 600-ringgit note is larger than the Philippines 1998 100,000-peso note measuring 355 x 215 mm, which the Guinness Book of World Records heretofore considered to be the physically largest legal tender note ever issued.

60,000 60-ringgit notes were packaged in folders and sold for 120 ringgit each, with a limit of five per buyer.
6,000 uncut sheets of three 60-ringgit notes were also sold for 500 ringgit each, with a limit of one per buyer.
6,000 600-ringgit notes were packaged in folders and sold for 1,700 ringgit each, with a limit of one per buyer.

The public can place their orders online from 5 January 2018. In the event of oversubscription, balloting will take place. Banknotes with special serial numbers will be sold via public auction on 10 March 2018.

On 8 June 2016, the Romanian parliament adopted a draft law which restores the crown on the head of the gold eagle in the country’s coat of arms. Pursuant to the provisions of Articles 14 and 17 of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania and of Law No. 146/2016 amending Law No. 102/1992 on the country’s coat of arms and seal, existing banknotes will continue to circulate in parallel with new notes and coins until 31 December 2018. Beginning 1 January 2018, Banca Nationala a Romaniei began issuing revised notes like the preceding issues, but with the new coat of arms and a new date.

According to a 6 December 2017 press release, the Central Bank of the Solomon Islands has issued a new 10-dollar note, the world’s first legal tender “gold coin note” (0.5 grams of .999 fine gold; worth approximately US$20 at spot price upon introduction). 20,000 pieces were produced in collaboration with the World Coin Association and MDM Group, a company based in Germany.
