The Iceland chapter of The Banknote Book is now available for individual sale and as a free download to subscribers.
This 20-page catalog covers notes issued by the Landsbanki Islands from 1929 to 1958, Landsbanki Íslands-Sedlabankinn from 1960 to 1963, and Sedlabanki Islands (Central Bank of Iceland) from 1963 to present. Revised 9 December 2015.

Iceland new 10,000-króna note (B817) to be issued 24.10.2013

On 25 September 2013 the Central Bank of Iceland (Seðlabanki Íslands) unveiled a new 10,000-króna (US$82) note to be issued 24 October 2013. The notes feature Jónas Hallgrímsson, scientist and poet, and the Eurasian golden plover and were designed by Kristín Þorkelsdóttir, who also designed Iceland's other denominations. The blue note measures 172 x 70 mm, and is protected by the following security features: a watermark of Jon Sigurdsson with electrotype 10000 and Cornerstones, 18-mm wide Optiks security thread, UV printing, intaglio printing, microprinting, and raised horizontal bars to assist the sight-impaired.

According to an article on News of Iceland dated 18 February 2013, the Central Bank of Iceland (Seðlabanki Íslands) will introduce a new 10,000-króna (US$77) this year, "probably this spring." The notes feature Jónas Hallgrímsson, scientist and poet, and the Eurasian golden plover and were designed by Kristín Þorkelsdóttir, who also designed Iceland's other denominations.

According to an article in Iceland Review Online dated 2 April 2012, Már Guðmundsson, governor of Sedlabanki Islands, Iceland's central bank, says the bank will issue a 10,000-króna (US$79) note in the autumn of 2013, double the largest denomination in use currently. The new 10,000-króna note will have improved safety features than older bank notes. It will have decorations related to national poet Jónas Hallgrímsson, as well as a picture of the golden plover.

Iceland contemplating 10,000-króna banknote

According to an IceNews article dated 8 June 2011, Mar Gudmundsson, governor of Sedlabanki Islands (Central Bank of Iceland), believes the country needs a 10,000-króna (US$88) banknote following decades of inflation. Currently the 5,000-króna note (B816) is the largest denomination.
Icelandic banknote curator accused of stealing museum's notes

According to an IceNews article dated 21 May 2011, the curator of Islandsbanki’s old banknotes was arrested and accused of stealing notes from the bank’s museum and attempting to sell them to collectors.
