The Banknote Register provides the most detailed information on all emissions of paper money in post-Soviet countries from 1991 to present. It describes the history of money circulation establishment and development in the new sovereign states. The book gives detailed information on each banknote, variations and types, commemorative and souvenir issues, security features, designers, signatories, serial prefixes, images portrayed on the notes. It will be no exaggeration to say that the author with the help of collectors and staff of national banks has compiled the best known up to now data, many of which will be published for the first time, and also data unknown to many collectors. This work has resulted in compilation and classification of the most complete information on currency circulation in the post-Soviet countries.

The publication of the Register will, for sure, reduce the number of blank spaces in the history of circulation in CIS and Baltic states. Nevertheless, the author continues searching for materials and communicating with paper money collectors, museum workers, designers and bank specialists and laymen. We hope that the Register of Banknotes of CIS and Baltic Countries will encourage you as well to study actively the currency circulation in the post-Soviet countries.

Bank of Estonia publishes third part of money catalog

Eesti Pank, the Bank of Estonia, has published the third part of Estonia's money catalog. The first and second volumes of the catalog published in 2007 include banknotes and circulation and collector coins that were issued during both the first Republic (1918-1940) and after the monetary reform of 1992 in the newly re-independent Estonia until 2008.

"Money of the Republic of Estonia" is the third part of the catalog "Banknotes and Coins of the Republic of Estonia". It concludes the history of Estonia's money until the end of 2010, covering all banknotes and coins issued in Estonia before the adoption of the euro.

Printed copies of the catalog can be ordered from the bank, and it is also available as a free PDF by clicking the links above.

Estonia adopts euro on 01.01.2011

Like the barn swallow on the back of one of my favorite Estonian banknotes shown above, the kroon will fly away on 1 January 2011 as Estonia joins 16 other countries which have traded their own individual currencies for the common euro. Kroon, we’ll miss you!

Estonia to adopt euro in 2011

According to a Bloomberg article dated 8 June 2010, European finance ministers backed Estonia’s bid to become the 17th country using the euro starting 1 January 2011. Time to start looking for kroon notes to fill the holes in your collections!

Estonia to print a new round of krooni notes

According to an article in The Baltic Times dated December 20, 2006: “Due to the ever-retreating prospects of joining the euro currency zone, the central Bank of Estonia has announced it will print a new round of bank notes. The currency supply was expected to be phased out and replaced by the euro. But the bank said the nation would need a new injection of notes prior to Estonia’s entering the eurozone. The first to be replenished will be the two and 10 kroon banknotes – which may come as a surprise to many Estonians, who find their wallets overflowing with the near-worthless paper money.”

No word on when the new notes would be released, nor what changes will be made to the design of same. The 2-kroon note (Pick 70a) is worth US$0.15 and the 10-kroon note (Pick 77a) is worth US$0.85.

Estonia issues revised 2- and 10-krooni notes dated 2006

The central Bank of Estonia has issued a new series of 2- and 10-krooni bank notes with a few renewed security features. Existing notes of the same denomination remain legal tender.

"Until now the latest Estonian bank notes were the 25-kroon notes printed in 2002. The new 2- and 10-kroon bank notes will not be the last ones Eesti Pank will issue before the euro changeover. At present, we are also preparing to order additional 25-, 100- and 500-kroon bank notes," said Andres Lipstok, Governor of Eesti Pank.
