Burundi new notes reportedly introduced 02.05.2019

On 2 May 2019, the Banque de la République du Burundi announced the introduction of revised notes of 500, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 francs. The new notes are like the preceding issues, but with improved paper substrate and security features.

Burundi new 1,000-franc note (B237a) confirmed

According to a press release, on 1 September 2015 the Banque de la République du Burundi introduced a new 1,000-franc note (B237a). This note completes the new family which also includes the following denominations: 500, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 francs, all dated 15-01-2015 and introduced on 29 April 2015.

Preceding 1,000-franc notes (B233a, above) will continue to circulate in parallel until 1 December 2015, at which time they lose their legal tender status, but the bank will accept them at a discount of 5% for a time to be announced.

According to a press release on its web site, on 29 April 2015 the Bank of the Republic of Burundi introduced a new family of banknotes consisting of denominations of 500, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 francs. The new notes are phyiscally smaller than the preceding issues, with improved security, durability, and accessibility for the sight impaired. A 1,000-franc denomination is planned for the new family (no release date has been announced), but the 100-franc note will be replaced by a coin, and 10-, 20-, and 50-franc notes will lose their legal tender status in three months, as will all old notes.

East African Community moves to introduce common currency in 2012

An East African Business Week article dated 14 February 2011, contains interesting information on the continuing plans to form an East African Community Monetary Union similar to the European Union, wherein all the partner states will replace their individual currencies—the Burundian franc, Kenyan shilling, Rwandan franc, Tanzanian shilling, and Ugandan shilling—for a single regional currency in 2012.

Burundi new reduced-size 100-franc note confirmed



On 5 July 2010, Banque de la Republique du Burundi issued a new 100-franc (US$0.10) note which has been reduced in size to 125 x 65 mm. Older notes of the same denomination remain legal tender until 31 December 2010.

Burundi new variety 1968 50-franc note confirmed


This 50-franc note is like Pick 22a, dated 15.5.1968, but the signature titles are L’ADMINISTRATEUR and LE PRESIDENT. According to the SCWPM, this date should have titles as LE VICE-PRESIDENT and LE PRESIDENT. If anyone has this note with the titles as described in the SCWPM, please send scans to confirm.

Burundi new smaller 500- and 1,000-franc notes confirmed

La Banque de la République du Burundi has introduced new 500- (US$0.40) and 1,000-franc (US$0.80) notes, both dated 01-05-09 and bearing the same signature combinations. The designs are the same as Pick 38 and Pick 39, respectively, but the sizes have been reduced to 132 x 67 mm and 137 x 69 mm.

Burundi issues new 2,000- and 5,000-franc notes

The Central Bank of Burundi issued new 2,000- and 5,000-franc notes (US$1.60 and US$4.05, respectively) on April 7, 2009. The new notes are said to be “impossible to forge.” The existing notes of these denominations will remain legal tender until September 30, 2009. The basic designs of the new notes are unchanged, but they are physically smaller (140 x 71 mm for the Fr2,000 and 145 x 73 mm for the Fr5,000) and use Cornerstone watermarks, revealing that they are printed by De La Rue. The bank’s governor, Gaspard Sindayigaya, said that the nation’s smaller denominations notes could also be reissued.
